These days, search engine optimization is almost as vital to online business as the internet itself. If a consumer in need of widgets, searching for “widgets” using Google, Yahoo!, MSN, Ask, etc. fails to notice your site, “Widget Emporium” within the search results, it’s safe to say that you’ve lost a sale… most likely to a competitor. It’s a science, really, tweaking your site for search engine optimization and (as such) there are SEO “scientists.” We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Mike Murray of FathomSEO whom has been in the business of maximizing online presence since 1997. Of course, Murray is keen on the newest methods in SEO and isn’t shy about sharing knowledge.
Siding on the debate over links vs. content to optimize search engine appearance, Murray explains his stance as, “It’s not content, content, content… it’s links, links, links. Work those keywords into your link structure… be strategic about which words you’re getting in your link structure…”

Sure links are important and having the right links internally is a no-brainer, but I have never understood the stance when people say:
“It’s not content, content, content… it’s links, links, links. Work those keywords into your link structure… be strategic about which words you’re getting in your link structure…â€
Well this is just like the chicken before the egg scenario. Why would some one link to a website without content? It makes no sense. It is about content, it always has been and it always will be. Links have to be secondary.
I do agree with Google links are counted heavier, but your not going to get any links without solid content.
Great viedo.

This interview certainly gives some good information and it also shows that SEO is not an exact science. We can never pinpoint exactly what the next move of any search engine is and that is what makes SEO so exciting.
Hi Chris, great stuff mate ,
Shared Ownership

Lot’s of good information here. Great video.
Good interview!
Lots of good info. Not quite sure I agree with links-links-links part, but thats debatable.

Hi
Please let me know how can I download video available on this site, if this possible.
Thanks for the good info here – esp. the thoughts on linking vs. content.
Very cool to have videos like this. I do not agree with the links vs. content statement though… but this is cool nonetheless.
Thank for good interview!
I would say that is a balance, we need good content and we need links, they are complementary. Each webmaster has to do it’s own test to see what works better for the website, having in mind both concepts.
Excellent video, thanks.

Is there any special techniques that can be used to optimize a wordpress blog on my server for SEO. One issue I see is no way to change the title tags on each page, where it seems to take the blog name for the home page.
I have several hundred 600+ inbound links.
I have pinged Technorati manually and used pingoat as well as pingomatic every time I add a new blog.
There is plenty of content, about 30 articles.
What else can I do? What else should I do to optimize my blog?

great stuff, im learning with every video I watch here
This was another good one!
I am going to have to do better with building links to my sites. I think my content is good, but we move up and down in the ranking. Like everyone else, I am trying to stay on the first page for at least 3-4 keywords.
excellent video, thanks!
Okay – I’m on it. Links, links, links. And if I’m able, use keywords in link text.
Thanks!
Nice video, but please notice that these advices are 2½ years old now, and SE’s are changing their algos constantly.
I do not agree with link, link, link. On the contrary actually. Good content is the reason for linking.
@oscar.
If you experience that your pages are jumping up and down in the index, it could be a sign of duplicate content problems. Although theres no penalty for having duplicate content, you will still shift position every time the duplicate content page is indexed, and again when your own page is.
http://www.copyscape.com is an excellent site for checking for duplicate content issues.
