SES: The Benefits of SEO in Online Retail

Posted on: December 14th, 2006 | 18 Comments

Online retail is not a venture for the faint of heart, to be sure. Finding success in the realm of eCommerce requires patience, diligence, and a willingness to be flexible and constantly experiment with new methods and techniques to improve rankings and conversion rates. Alan Dick and Brian Mark are successful e-tailers who know a thing or two about running an online store. Our own Mike McDonald was lucky enough to catch up with them at Search Engine Strategies in Chicago, and they had some intriguing things to say about SEO and online retail.

Both Alan and Brian have noted that since implementing common SEO strategies into their respective online shops, their businesses have seen almost exponential growth in both traffic and revenue streams. What areas did these intrepid entrepreneurs focus on with their site optimization strategies? One fundamental aspect they both agree upon is the balance between paid and organic search listings. Focusing too much on one or the other is not the most efficient way to achieve optimum search rankings, but a holistic approach that takes focuses on the interdependency of paid and organic listings has proven to be the most effective strategy in the long term.

Also, pay-per-click should be viewed as more of a testing mechanism to chart the conversion rates for certain keywords, rather than a complete marketing tool. Social media is playing an increasingly important role in online retail, so it may be in the best interests of retailers to tap the blogosphere for product reviews, with the caveat of full disclosure if the reviewer is receiving product compensation for his or her time. The goal should be to facilitate discussion about your products, and not to influence the conversation.

What other tips and tricks to Alan and Brian suggest for e-tailers? You’ll have to watch the video to find out!

Just to give you an update on our video feeds, we will be going live with a new video player that will have different speeds for you to choose from all the way down to 56k dial-up built into the flash player. We will also be including an mp3 audio file. The changes should come withim the next 7 - 10 days.

We will be adding a low-band version of the video as well as an audio only option soon. It’s being worked on now, so I am hoping we’ll have it by next week sometime.

    Hi there,
I’m on 56kbs dial-up (no broadband available where I’m located!) and wondered if you guys would consider providing a compressed ‘audio only’ version of these interviews as it’s a real pain trying to watch. What I’ve heard so far is very interesting…please make it easier for me to access the info! Thanks.

I just wacthed the vidio, and I have to say, You have hit the nail on the head. I am reffering to telling us that it is not a midus touch industry. I have had my site for a year, with many downfalls, and disapointments…….why, because I thought for a few dollars, and just sticking to one voice, I would be a little better off. I have in the last month been doing just what they talked about. Get busy, try, If you never tried chocolett because it was brown, what would you have missed all your life. I also have to agree to go to seminars, or take school class at your communitee collage on ecomerce.

Thanks for sharing the video! It’s great!

  12. This was very interesting, as an SEO executive in Scotland I agree with this marketing strategy of striking a balance between Pay Per Click and organic growth with a website. I would have liked to have talked to these guys more about their inbound linking strategy. Wish I could attend all these conferences you have over there.

  13. In many cases, the systems used for these types of retailers are custom developed. Custom development allows for strategies that are “outside the box” If this type of system interests you to be incorporated into your strategies feel free to contact us.

  14. Kim says:

    I enjoyed that…thank you!

  15. That was fairly informative - worth watching. I found it interesting that they use that special imaging to foil image theft. I’d like to learn more about that. I know it was a Search Engine conference, but I’d like to see a follow up interview about what kind of systems they use for shopping carts, order processing, and shipping. Keep up the good work.
