The Generative Nature of Online Video Marketing ()

It may only be 15 degrees outside in the Windy City; but inside Day 1 of the Search Engine Strategies conference, subjects such as online video seem to already be hot topics for discussion. WebProNews kicks off its SES coverage this week with Chris Richardson behind the microphone. Chris is joined by Ben Wills, an online marketing consultant and owner of BenWills.com, who gives his initial impression of this morning’s sessions pertaining to online video.

In his chat with WebProNews, Ben immediately starts with the recognition that the realm of video search is increasing at an exponential rate. Businesses are going to have to adapt to climate of online video in order to continually develop innovative and contextually relevant marketing campaigns geared toward the digital consumer. A controversial method that Ben touches on is the use of multiple MySpace profiles laden with promotional video, a tactic designed to inundate search results with the maximum amount of video content possible. The debate lingers on whether or not this practice is little more than a spam tactic, or can be reluctantly categorized as “grey hat” in terms of marketing optimization.

Online video is not just an avenue of expression for the vlogger anymore. With companies like AOL making their online video APIs available for businesses and marketers alike, the potential for reaching an attentive and established consumer base is too lucrative to ignore. The market is changing, and consumers have adopted a multimedia approach to their online life. By the same token, businesses will have to adapt their current marketing approaches to integrate search, display, and video advertising concepts to appeal to the emerging multimedia client. Internet users consume information via multiple platforms, and marketers will have to proactively develop new methods of utilizing each of them in concert, especially online video, to target the new age consumer.

    Chris thanks for the update on the emerging video optimization space. Considering all of the video pirates jumping into the space, it usually works best to stamp the video content with an ownership seal and also include any legal copyright info at the close of their video header tags. The SES recommendation to use multiple MySpace accounts solely promotional purposes is soon to be abused. Looking forward to your updates this week, especially on seo of dynamic web sites with Detlev Johnson … Detlev Always Delivers.

    Video is going to be the bane of the internet. We will see millions of people creating and uploading unwatchable amateur video.

  5. @cvos, I say, “bring it on!” I’m just a lad by some standards but I remember the days of Geocities… a deluge of terrible amateur web content. MySpace is reminding me of that now, but it’s certainly not ruining the web.

    If you speak soley on the issue of bandwidth, fortunately those sorts of videos are being herded into pens like YouTube where an arguably competent corporation is footing the bill.

  6. Video has been online since 1995 when we used to put interviews with bands on the first music portal that we created. They took a long time to download. We are now starting to have the promise of usable video delivered to us and it is great. In order to generate quality video we need to monetize it. This is what contextual advertising has done for web sites and with video a small amount of money will go a long way toward having better videos produced. DataGrant Productions is an example of a repurposed company adopting this route. Like the early web sites quality will move to the top, the advertisers will come and the money will flow.

  7. Video is BIG online; I see the need to use it NOW. Up till now most of the video I see is used for news but ads are put in before each clip. I hope the SES recommendation to use multiple MySpace accounts solely promotional purposes will not be abused.

    P.S Can I put a video flyin ad on my affiliate sites?
