Does Google have a sinister Master Plan to invade the privacy of us all? A new video on YouTube called “The Google Master Plan” plays like a Nazi propaganda film making the case that we should fear Google’s reach and power. It begins by showing puppeteer strings and with an ominous sounding voice says, “What began as a former students project now rules the World Wide Web”. Later, the video voice over states with even more intensity … “Google can create incredibly detailed dossiers on everyone of us”. The video ends with a not-so innocent question .. “What do you think, Does Google really worry about our privacy?” If this video isn’t a joke then Microsoft level paranoia is really starting to hit Google. Take a look at the video and let me know what you think.
In this episode of As The Web Turns blogger Robert Scoble writes a post saying Techmeme has a bug because it highlights blog posts from bloggers that are simply linking to other blog posts that first blogged a story. Got that … well I continue … The example Scoble used was of a post by Duncan Riley who blogged about a story first written by others. Riley took Scoble’s comments very personal and asked Scoble (if he should) not (be) allowed to report of these things because his last name isn’t Scoble? Then, Riley laid this juicy accusation on the table, “…Given your choice of one particular friend I’m not really surprised you’re targeting me, of course the gutless wonder wouldn’t have the balls to do it himself, knives in the back are much more easier after all, and attack by proxy makes sense.” Who is this friend? Scoble himself denies knowledge and insists that he simply thought Techmeme would be better if original sources of stories were linked to more prominently. We at WebProNews will try to provide the answer to this mystery on the next episode of As The Web Turns…
So what story were they blogging about? Wikipedia fans and foes were buzzing when bloggers began posting about the online encyclopedia’s need for money. Without an injection of cash, Wikipedia would have to shut down in three to four months. That puzzled a lot of people, since Wikipedia just wrapped up a million-dollar fund raising effort. It also turned out to be incorrect. Said PodTech’s Robert Scoble:
“That is NOT true, based on the transcripts of what she actually said. It’s why I would rather memetrackers (and other bloggers) actually link to people who were in the audience at a news event.”
Matt Drudge has a link on his site referencing a story in the LA Times that says, ” LA TIMES: DRUDGE REPORT ‘has reigned over all others — until now’… ” Very intriguing. You wouldn’t think that Drudge would link to a story telling of his internet defeat. When you go to the article you realize that it is actually titled, “Gaming the Digg” and really disses Digg and its submitters. Not much new there that we haven’t covered over at WebProNews in the last few months. So, why does Drudge link to this story… (start sarcasm) it just may have to do with the articles last sentence, “As for the Drudge Report, its algorithm - Matt Drudge linking to whatever the heck he feels like - appears, at this hour, to be secure.”
Have you ever wondered what Web 2.0 is? A great video I found linked to on the blog Somewhat Frank offers a compelling history lesson of the web … leading up to … you guessed it … Web 2.0. I love the video style … it uses no words, just a music track and creative visuals such as a pencil writing and erasing words. This video was created by Michael Wesch , an Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Kansas State University. All I can say is this should be required viewing for all college classes discussing marketing and the Internet. By the way Professor, what does this have to do with anthropology?
