Microsoft’s Soapbox shuts down, Broadband continues to grow, Google’s simple site pays

Posted on: March 23rd, 2007 | 2 Comments

Soapbox, Microsoft’s version of online video site, YouTube, has been temporarily shut down. Microsoft claims the site is being put on hold until better ways of identifying and purging copyrighted material can be implemented. It’s a safe move for the company, who hopes to avoid legal issues similar to those that Google and YouTube have been faced with.

The world is entering a new era of broadband development. Ben Macklin, E-marketer senior analyst says, “The market is moving from the high speed internet, to the very high speed internet. While the U.S. and China have the most broadband households in the world, other countries are quickly jumping on the bandwagon. South Korea and Japan are two countries currently entering the newest phase of broadband expansion. By 2011, its projected that in North America alone, broadband use will reach more than 100 million households.

Google is known for having a less cluttered search site than its competitors, but what many don’t know is that the design may be a strategic business move rather than a simple act of kindness. Research revealed by an anonymous Google employee has shown that fewer ads means less short term revenue, but more profits in the long run. The employee says this is because, “users started trusting the advertising more and were more likely to click on ads.” The clean presentation of the site is a win for Google as well as its users.

Still a notch behind Yahoo in user popularity, Google Finance is offering some appealing features, hoping to compete more effectively with Yahoo Finance. Manoj Jasra at Web Analytics World found promise in the Google site. Jasra says the ad-free interface is the most appealing aspect of Google finance, in comparison with its Yahoo counterpart. Presentation and search were among other reasons that Jasra recommends a trip to the site.

  1. amo nosso Deus claro e amizade sempre

  2. Nice to see Microsoft taking a part in protecting copyright. This may sound sceptical, but I don’t think they would be closing down if they had the same populatiry as You Tube.
