Google’s Vanessa Fox agreed to an interview with Webpronews’ Mike McDonald at the SES conference in New York, and guess who didn’t show up this time. And since Rand Fishkin of seomoz.org already proved that video interviews were so easy a caveman could do it, Mike got his absent revenge and Rand got another shot at pinning her down that is on Webmaster issues.
Rand brings up some great questions, and Vanessa has some great answers. One of the most useful tips is deep into the video, so it’s a good idea to highlight it here.
The burning question: When a webmaster moves an entire site, what’s the best way to handle the dip in the search engine rankings while that transition is made?
The common sense answer: Fox stressed that it was a bad idea to simultaneously move a website to a new domain and redesign the whole thing. Instead, she says, take the pages from your old site and put them on your new site exactly as they are. Redirect the pages one at a time, carefully mapping on a one-to-one basis.
We will continue to bring more live coverage from the SES conference in New York.

Great video, most of the stuff I have heard her say before, but it is always interesting to see how Vanessa says it.

[…] With all the coverage from Barry and gang over at SERoundtable, as well as the video interviews from WebProNews, it’s almost like being at SES NY without any of the expense. SERoundtable is doing a bangup job (as usual) of covering the sessions. And WebProNews has some nice video interviews, such as Rand Fishkin interviewing Vanessa Fox, Dana Todd on Search Marketing Trends and Rebecca Kelly on the Blogging Craze. […]

How about asking/awnsering real questions like about government intervention in the search engine results? er, like direct intervention on a site by site basis? etc, you know, the unethical control of freedom etc?
Good content for the most part. However, these interview have too much chit chat and giggles. Let’s get more professional and keep to the topic - forget the private jokes the general audiences doesn’t get.
For some reason, it’s funny to watch this video on mute and just watch their body language/expressions.. Maybe I’m just odd..

Please get Mike McDonald to do future interview with Fox. Mike is more polish, professional interviewer and get right to the important point.

[…] Vannesa Fox elaborated on this a bit more in her uneasily casual conversation that was taped with Rand Fishkin. I don’t want to steal their thunder and paraphrase it, so suffice it to say it’s well worth watching and listening to. […]
from her body language it looks like vanessa has the hots for rand.
i agree with comments above. this interview was more goofy and less useful.
Rand Fishkin are good at link building and SEO. However, he suck at conducting interview. Fishkin should learn to listen more and talk less. Leave any unrelated subject after the interview you are wasting our time watching this video.

I really appreciate this video. I have experienced this dip in rankings when moving my site. I love the strategy you suggest.
Regarding Google base. I have been attempting to optimize for Google base with a lot of real estate clients I have had and its fun to let our clients know they are in the refinements section as well as in the organic and paid search listings. It gives them a warm fuzzy feeling inside ;-P.

[…] I’ve been working on a redesign for 14th Colony and part of the redesign is to make the site more search-engine friendly. I’ve learned a lot since this site was launched and want to put that knowledge into practice here like I already do on my client sites. One of the changes I want to implement is the link structure because having keyword in your URL (instead of a generic post number) helps with rankings. And on the advice of ex-Googler Vanessa Fox, I’ve decided to do the link structure update before I push the redesign. […]
