Recent years have brought about a revolution for search engine optimization. First of all, it is so much more than just the optimization or marketing process. A major component is the shift from organic to paid searches. Because companies want and need immediate results, some prefer the paid method. Special training and education are also needed with SEO, which takes up even more time. Most companies do not have that much spare time on their hands. SEO-Web-Consulting President Valerie DiCarlo spoke to Webpronews in an interview at the SES conference in New York about these trends.
“With SEO, if done correctly, it does take time. Companies, no matter what the size, want to see results.”
Controlling the trafficking of websites is another factor involved. A lot of thought and planning is required with this aspect, because it is a critical part to whether the website is successful or not. Companies must think like the user, and act like the user to be able to prevent any problems they may encounter. DiCarlo, along with our very own Mike McDonald, told us some features involved in getting people to the sites.
“You have to look at so many other factors which is positioning, navigation, usability, architecture, studying how users use the site, what they do when they get to the site, what they’re going to click, how they’re going to click, what works, what doesn’t work, what does that kind of stuff is absolutely essential. ”
These features are applicable to all websites that requires a click. If this is taken care of in the preparation phase, then problems will never arise.
Some issues may arise when combining SEO with usability. Consider the perception of the user when navigating the site. For starters, graphic navigation never works. Text navigation has been proven to be the most user-friendly.
“Using text navigation — that’s not only going to helpit’s not only going to be user-friendly. But then, taking it one step farther, where do you place that navigation? Do you place top navigation? Do you use left navigation? Well, it’s proven that left navigation does work better because people read left to right, top to bottom.”
