Google Changes Algorithm?

In the New Year, Google seems to be changing their algorithm and making the search results more time related. The leading search engine has been ranking items from popular sites like Digg higher than factual or historical sites like Wikipedia. Is this a move towards a Web 3.0? In other news, Kara Ratliff reports that Yahoo’s Chief Performance Expert, Steve Souders plans on joining the Google team on January 7th, 2008.     well rohit,

    people can vote for result only that time when they are logged in their google mail a/c or any other a/c. At that time on same browser if people search for any keyword google also showed up that option.

  2. Really Google has changed its algorithm. for my website , the results have dramaticaly fallen down for some business keywords.

    It is clear to me that Google likes to make these changes at the beginning of the year. My site experienced a similar hit at the beginning of this year.

    The option reflects only when you are logged in gmail id and you are also browsing the google serps. So its customized results you will get you want if you want.

  5. I also think google changes its algorithm.Now a Days Google also give option to users Add a result in SERPS.They can even vote for up and down SERPS results.

    I totally agree that blogs and other Web2 publishing methods are taking favour with search engines. How long this will last is another question. But for now you really need to develop a blog to support your web site. You can see evidence in the SEO Seduction Secrets ebooks which was published recently about this and how to make the most of it. I personally started a blog for internetmarketing2.com and saw traffic the next day. It also seems that blogs are a LOT easier to promote with social networking and social bookmarketing than a web site. Just the nature of the beast :)

    I have also noticed alot of diffrent results when searching on google. It seems that they are tryign diffrent things. in the past 2 weeks my site htt://www.artisticwoodflooring.com has been jumping around all over the place. where it use to be number 1 is now not showing up. I guess it is a waiting game until the update is complete.

    When I look back to history of Empires, I see the same thing on present companies. Imagine, each company is one of an old empire. The more time passes by those well known strong empires went down one by one, say like Roman Empire.
    Every Empire {Company} has a beginning and an end. Roman Empire, Ottoman Empire, Great Britain, etc. !!! what has left at the end…? Probably, small portion of the world market :)
    Well, that’s what I see about Google. They want to do something to secure themselves and relying on the companies advertises on their servers. Everyday, I see much more search engines more than the good content web pages in their site, why..??? On the other hand, MSN Live, Yahoo, and ASK has better performance than Google bringing those related pages with good content than Search Engines. Do we have to pay those search engines to come up on Google as well as Google’s ad words???

    Let me tell you something, you can be the best SEO Engineer, and/or you can hire the bes SEO Engineer and/or programmer, whatever but, you can not control people’s mind… Take alook at 1980’s 1990’s big companies, where are they now…??

    Well, history is always a good lesson….. There are a lot to learn more for those big companies….

    One thing that kills me is that I have built a solid content based site for a professional massage business in Greenville, SC at http://www.Greenville-Massage.com and a similar site with 100% parked page ads comes up higher than ours in the search engines. The site has ads about Greenville restaurants, real estate, lawncare, etc., but nothing about massage therapy and it usually outranks us on the SERPS. That site has 4 backlinks and ours has over 100. One day ours will be on page 1 for our main keyword phrases, then the next day we can’t find it even when we type in the actual domain name. A few days later, we’re back on page one. When it rains we can’t find our site. I don’t know what’s going on at Google, but I think they’re running scared and the bizarre search results are telling.

    This is baloney. “Incoming Authority Links Are Useless?” If Google did this you just open the results up to spammers of social news sites i.e. not going to happen.

    How is any site suppose to keep up. That means if I build a new site - I will always be falling behind. It’s starting to look to me that longevity is the only real strength a site has.

  18. With over 7 years experience marketing online and creating “Auto-Pilot” revenue streams, keeping up with the constant changes in Google can seem like a challenge. However, I do agree with what Google is trying to do as Goolge’s Algorithm changes keep lazy marketers out of the game.
    As far as paying for placement with Google Adwords, for a small business, that’s like throwing money in the garbage.

    Concentrate on achieving “Organic Search” results for relevant “key phrases”, not “keywords” and you will be fine.

    Yes it has changed, I’ve seen my sites realign over the last few days. In fact three have shot to the very top and I’m not a big player just a struggling writer.. Bit worried what value the meta and content have though, as the site name seems to have become more important than the content.

  20. I am still trying to figure it all out. Why is it that only my front page and product pages show up in searches but many of the other pages are not? Only 10% or less of my pdf are picked up on my product pages. Anyone have any suggestions? I have fed Google a couple of times a month and even specific pdf pages I have fed and that does not seem to make any difference.

    I tried one of those pay for blog post advertising services, then I couldn’t even find the site I was promoting even though I had been on page one. I went round and round with pay per blog post company about asking the bloggers to remove my posts in hope I’d get back on page one for my main keyword phrases. After we had removed half of the posts, I was back on page one. I can’t say for sure, but it sure looked like Google was trying to punish those who use the services of their competitors. I was bumped for a week and a half at the end of December.

    David - thanks for that JP Morgan story. Glad to see that I am not alone.

    I use the net as the world at my fingertips. Google has been my first source for searching, but I am beginning to find that other search engines like MSN Live or Yahoo are returning more relevant results than Google since their ‘algorithm changes’.. My current opinion is that their recent changes have negatively impacted what used to be the premier search engine in the world!

  24. Staying up with Google’s changes is like a puppy chasing it’s tail.
    One can get dizzy and waste a lot of time and money.

    Stay the course and focus on quality content and specific anchor text links.

    This is not really anything new. They are constantly changing / tweaking the algo to keep the searches relevant and to stay one step of those who game the system.

    The bigger issue that few notice is: by being all things to everyone, Google searches are becoming less relevant and the superfluous ads become more annoying.

    What Google should be doing is making it more affordable for small marketers to remain competitive with the “Big Dogs”. But I don’t expect that to happen. Google Adwords prices will continue their upward trend. I would reallu like to see a viable alternative to Google. And the operative word here is “viable”…

    It’s clear that Google is updating more frequently nowadays, and this gives it the resources to pick up on new pages more quickly, including reviews, social bookmarks, etc. So perhaps this is a permanent shift, or perhaps an experiment.

    Interesting to note that although the algo continues to morph, and pages are getting indexed at lightning speed, PageRank updates happen only sporadically. I suspect Google is in the long term looking at reducing the importance placed on PageRank, and perhaps phasing it out as a visible scoring system (which has allowed sites with high PR to sell links).

    I have a bit of advice for those who’ve commented here, especially small businesses (as I am a small business owner myself, but also a marketing specialist). I work primarily with Google when it comes to making sure my sites rank and are findable by the public. Perhaps as the algorithm shifts, it would be better to focus on the other methods of exposure out there. I have noticed that web 2.0/3.0 content such as user-submitted press releases and articles, video, images, blogs/blog entries and white papers (pdf documents) are starting to list and rank above traditional websites. What does this mean for your small business? Simply put, get on board! When it comes to Google, I try to ride the wave. I take note of what seems to be deemed as most important at the time, and I jump all over it.

    Any business, organization or individual can benefit from the exposure gained by press releases, articles and blogs. I think you’ll find that the more you start to get into these forms of marketing, the better your results will be. I don’t focus so much on my website ranking well for keywords anymore as I do on making sure my other forms of content (which all link back to my website) rank highly. My website itself doesn’t show up until the 3rd or 4th page for my keywords, but my press releases and white papers (which again link back to my website and help to build my credibility) all have the top 3 listings on page 1 for my keywords! And I’ve noticed that all these efforts are slowly but surely increasing my website’s Google PageRank!

    Here’s a hint: Do a bit of research on those press/news distribution sites and blog providers that currently have high PageRank from Google. Then focus your efforts on those. You’ll find that your additional content not only ranks highly, but shows up relatively quickly (usually within a day or 2, if not a few hours). Take about a month just to focus on creating additional content that can be mass-distributed to major sites like YouTube and Digg. Content that can be shared becomes viral marketing, and will do you much better than a few static websites in the end!

    The changes I have noticed that; When I did Google for Searches, it used to bring up more “Search Engines” than the “Individual web pages”. This is now a little better. When I search at Yahoo, I see more individual pages than search engines; which I like better.

    A great thing that google can do is to change the prices when comes to cost per click campains.To make it a bit more afordable for small businesses.It s enough that the ranking on google is hard to get,and takes longer than any other search engine….Hope this change is going to help….

    I too have seen some fluctuations that were, at first, unsettling. But, all things considered, nothing has changed at the core. “Google is seeking to please the searcher in Web 3.0″ - This is not new news. Google has been striving to deliver the most relevant and reputable results since Web 1.0 and have made great strides in doing so.

    Yes - it can be taxing trying to keep up with the search engine algorithm changes - so don’t drive yourself mad trying to do so. Simply make and maintain the best offering to your market online and stay the course.

  36. I’m sure something was going on at the GooglePlex within the last two weeks. A majority of my sites jumped around the SERPs. One is caught in a limbo and is really getting to me. Just finished three hours of code analyzing to see what’s going on.

    How are small businesses ever supposed to keep up with these constant changes? This is important to our businesses but if it keeps changing how can each new algorithm be called “relevant”. Vertical sites such as ThomasNet.com are becoming more relevant than ever for business.
