Product Manager of Live Search Webmaster Tools, Jeremiah Andrick spent the day here at the WebProNews headquarters. Our very own Mike McDonald took him on a wild, Kentucky escapade while picking his brain about Webmaster tools at MSN. Andrick discusses indexing issues, cloaking detection, and goes into detail about why AdSense showed up in their search results. While showing off their athleticism, the two also discuss why transparency is key and why to stay away from paid links. Don’t miss all of this and the inside scoop to both companies’ viral campaign, right here on WebProNews.

Jeremiah I would love to hear why websites like http://www.coleparmer.com do so poorly in MSN? Simply not enough content is not a good answer because that is not the type of website where their product pages would have loads of content

  2. Tiga Beck Says:

MSN… who really cares? Their market share sucks and their wannabe different then Google arrogant attitude falls way short of getting the job done.

  3. admin Says:

So.. how do you really feel about it?

  4. Jaan Kanellis Says:

By the way I really enjoyed the laid back feeling of the video. Mike this could be a whole new angle in talking folks. I might have to come visit Lex if your buying the beer.

  5. admin Says:

    Come on down!

  6. Tiga Beck Says:

Well lets see… How do I really feel. I think MSN sucks and so does most of the rest of the world. Why? because their search results are crap. Their “ultra secret” algorithms put too much weight on the age (God knows that’s a good indicator of quality) of domains rather then content and peer authority. Cloaking he says? who the hell has cloaked links in the last 4 years? Give me a break admin… are you 12 years old?

  7. Mark Says:

But how many of you really use live.com? Nobody cares about MSN’s online properties.

  8. Tony Bailey Says:

This is really hacking me off, I have seen my web site go from pole position to not even listed and try as hard as I can I just cannot get live search to show me in the first 20 pages, sites with less relevant content get higher than me, I have no cloaking or anything that can be defined as not acceptable with MSN live search. I have used the tools, validated the site but still nothing. With Google and Yahoo I have no problems.
Here is a thought…..if you have been used to having your site top of the stack is it MSN’s intention to push us to PPC by not giving us the positions back that we had put so much effort into ???? Just a thought.

  9. Matt Cutts Says:

Mike, totally awesome video. Congrats on making it both educational and a ton of fun. :)

  10. Jeremiah Andrick Says:

Jaan thanks for the question. The answer comes down to a number of factors. Things like our index size; something we are working fevorishly to improve. We can index billions of sites, but not every page and not every site. We are working to improve this, but it takes time. So your right it isn’t just up to the content provider. My job however is to help you to find ways to improve the likely hood that your site will be indexed and ranked without giving away the secret sauce.

I would be glad to work with you individually. Contact me at our blog and we can discuss offline. blogs.msdn.com/webmaster

What’s the score with MSN, MSN have made it really difficult to rank, others will disagree, but I find MSN the most fussy SE to rank in. Google & Yahoo are the easiest out of the Top 3 SE’s. No matter how well you link from another site, or how good your Onpage and Offpage SEO is, MSN still wont rank you. Others over at SEO Elite and Keyword Elite Forum will say the same.

    Hi
That vid was better than good it was great Oh yes
real people talking much better than these shady marketers
vids hey and i am a marketer hahah
    Anyway Moving on
One of my sites which was live for several years was in a small topic
unlike probably most of the above and the results from MSN were far better than any other search engine in that it was a better quality of traffic and therfore this related in the majority of the income from that
site being directly attributed to MSN searches google were just rubbish
    frankly.
Now i know that is the opposit of what most people say however the proof is in the income as far as i am concerned not in the ranking in google or what this or that expert has to say
    Just my two peneth hahah

  21. Paid Links « Tom O’Keefe Says:

[...] Paid Links 12 01 2008 When Google came on to the scene one aspect of their algorithm that set them apart was PageRank.  PageRank (PR) was calculated on a scale of 0 to 10 and based heavily on the number and quality of links to one’s site.  Of course over time ways to beat the system (link farms, paid links) were devised to beat the system, increase your search engine results and therefore gain more traffic.  The link below is an interview that webproworld conducted with Microsoft - a search engine that is getting a lot better and not as temperamental as Google!!  The video talks about MSN’s stance on paid links from sites such as Text Link Ads.  Google flat out bans paid links and your site will be penalized if you use them.  MSN takes a softer approach than Google and won’t ban you for using paid links but they certainly don’t recommend them. One more thing!  I think MSN has come along significantly in their search capabilities and seem to do a better job indexing sites based on search engine optimization (SEO) practices.  As mentioned above Google is very temperamental and bans sites at will - it’s becoming quite annoying and I think opening the door for a better (and new) search engine.  Unfortunately MSN is not used nearly as often as Google so even if you place prominently on their site you still won’t get a lot of significant traffic.  In the search business neither Yahoo or MSN will knock off Google mainly because they are old/established names that everyone already has preconceptions about.  It will take a new smart startup to set Google straight.   MSN Talks Webmaster Tools     [...]

Nike is indexed via the domain name nike.com — no problem!

If they’re too stingy to register “jordans”, then that’s THEIR problem, not the search engine’s.
