Although catalogs and websites are two very different entities, there are some basic design rules that apply to both. Brent Niemuth of J. Schmid & Assoc. Inc. discusses these rules in an interview with Mike McDonald at the 25th Annual ACCM Conference, the largest conference for catalog and Internet merchants. Both the catalog and the website should have a clean, consistent design, and they should both look alike. You want your customers to identify one with the other. Watch the WebProNews interview for more design rules.

I know your a casual guy Mike, but you might want to take the pen out of your ear before doing an interview on camera.

Nice information I can pass onto clients. It is very important to have a consistent message, vibe and color scheme across the board. Also, use color and imagery to make your website memorable. Building a website that is “safe” and looks just like all of the thousands of other “safe” websites out there is such a waste of time and money. Find a way to be safe and make it easy for your end users to navigate your website, while leaving a lasting good impression that generates a positive emotion from your website.
