SMX Advanced, as the title suggests, is not for ebusiness folks just now discovering how search engines work and why they matter to a website. SmallBusinessSEM.com’s Matt McGee, who says the concept of linkbuilding has pretty much mainstream, is looking forward to lots of discussions about search bots and advanced strategery one won’t find at general SEM conferences.

I am not surprised that your wife is getting the value of links.

Site owners, are learning that links are the equivalent of familiar referrals in their industry. The effectiveness of links in sending traffic to their site and building their authority in search make sense. Business owners will often state that their sales are driven by referrals. Now that the web is the place, where everyone meets to find product and services link building makes sense. Some confusion may have been caused by the focus on link building schemes for ranking that did not follow the natural development of referrals. If you can get the mayor in your town to make referrals at the city council meeting its easy to understand why that beats the anonymous referral from the tag board at the super market.

Business owners understand building a good reputation in the real world, leads to referrals, so drop the SEO jargon and find a way for them to do the same in web world.
