Click fraud is a very complex issue. Unfortunately, much of the information available has been misinterpreted due to that complexity. In this video, Shuman Ghosemajumder of Google gives some information that will hopefully clear up that gray area.
For starters, click fraud is driven by 2 major incentives:
1. Attacking advertisers – when an advertiser tries to hide one of his competitors
2. Inflating affiliates – when an AdSense publisher tries to fraudulently increase his own revenue by generating false clicks
Methods of click fraud stem from simplistic techniques to sophisticated techniques. Simplistic methods include manual clicks such as when a fraudster personally clicks ads on his own computer. It gets a little more sophisticated when a fraudster organizes botnets and uses them for click fraud. Click farms, which consist of individuals or organizations that try to hire people to click on ads continuously, fall somewhere in the middle of the simple and sophisticated click fraud techniques.
Shuman does point out that: “the impact of invalid clicks at Google is minimal.”
Google detects click fraud through simple rules and statistical anomaly detection. Google’s simple rules consist of certain rules they have already defined as what they classify as an invalid click. Since some simple rules can be easily broken, statistical anomaly detection is more effective because it looks at specific activities on websites and compares the expected behavior to the observed behavior. This data gives Google a better understanding of how to detect invalid clicks.
For advertisers wanting to take proactive measures to prevent click fraud, Shuman advises keeping the return on investment (ROI) as the central focus. Research and gather as much data as possible, test everything, and track all results. If you apply these actions and your ROI drops for no reason, you have a good reason to suspect undetected click fraud and should file a claim.

Very nice article but we think that google has to keep developing more tools to discover frauds as many companies that try getting into adwords feel that they are wasting money for nothing.
It’s all about holding back money.
Hmmm, does not give much information except simple rules..
I agree with David, bounces should not be charge.
I think that Google makes a huge amount of money from click fraud. The only true way to address it is to not charge advertisers for “bounces” where someone who visits my site for a second or two. My site routinely gets a bounce rate of 45-60%, so more than half my budget is wasted on these spurious clicks. What a hustle!
I do not believe they know what they are doing with click fraud. I have several huge sites. I added ad sense to my smaller site http://www.centralparkgossip.com to see if it was any good. Keep in mind I have other huge sites that do not use add sense at all. Well 2 weeks ago they sent me a e mail accusing me of click fraud. They said you could appeal and you would get a answer withing 48 hrs. I am still waiting. Meanwhile, I really do not care as I only had add sense on my small site as a test to see if it had any money making results. If it did, I would have added to my huge traffic sites. With running several sites, and also running around new york city taking celebrity photos for the sites, I think I would not have the time to sit here clicking. Besides, for what I get paid from the magazines for my photos, sitting here clicking is just not worth the time considering I think I had around 80 bucks in my ad sense account and that represents around 9 months. They have accused me of click fraud which I did not do. I figure if they cancel a million accounts of small web sites and each account has around 80 bucks in it, they make 80 million because they wont pay you. I do not think google has a real way of finding click fraud, otherwise they would not have gone after little web sites that really did nothing. Needless to say, I am using other ads from other companies on my high traffic sites. Of course I could have high powered friends contact google direct on the phone, but for 80 bucks, it isnt worth the time or agravation. It is their loss as I will not use them on my high traffic sites now. Like I said, it was a test and they failed !
thanks alot for this my site http://www.3rbonline.com/vb
