It may sound crazy, but it worked and even went viral! Shizuka, a high-end beauty spa in midtown Manhattan, approached Bill Balderaz of Webbed Marketing in an effort to promote and market their company. The spa wanted to raise brand awareness, show how they were different, bring in new clients, and gain media attention.
After examining the spa’s products, Bill and his crew discovered an ingredient that would create a lot of buzz… sterilized nightingale droppings, AKA bird poop. This ingredient is in one of the spa’s premium organic treatments called the Geisha Facial and is known for brightening and cleansing the skin.
Webbed Marketing made a spoof video about a reporter interviewing the owner of Shizuka about the spa’s premier products. When the owner gets to the Geisha Facial and its ingredients, the reporter is of course, both surprised and disgusted. After some persuasion, the owner convinces the reporter to get the facial. Upon receiving the treatment, the reporter leaves the spa feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
Shortly after she leaves the spa, a pigeon poops on her shoulder. Her initial reaction is repulsion, but she quickly has a change of heart as she reaches over, rubs the droppings on her face, and walks away with a smile.
Webbed Marketing promoted the video through press releases, on social networks, and through bloggers. Needless to say, the video went viral. It has since appeared on the Today Show, CNN, Jay Leno, Reuters, and many more media outlets.
It’s a cute idea, but how in the world do you come up with something like that? As Bill points out in the above video, “Every company has a compelling story.” He goes on to explain how each company has to find their story and be willing to take a risk with it.
Now that you’ve heard that story, is anyone up for a bird poop facial?

OK I accept full blame for that woman’s performance. She was actually a real journalist and that is why I cast her. I wish I had had more time to help her because I think should COULD have been great (it was her first time acting) but hey we were in a hurry and it as gorilla filmmaking…
This is so funny and interesting… the humor is just perfect, makes me sorry when we did the DIY videos for our website that we weren’t intentionally funny! Back to the drawing board!
That was a great concept but what horrible acting- truly gives me hope that even I’ll be able to put something together and have a successful viral campaign. Thanks for pointing it out!
Live video blog!

Lol, at the the end of the facial video, where the bird poops on her shoulder, V Funny!!
