CES 2009: Sony Introduces 8-Inch VAIO Lifestyle PC

Posted on: January 9th, 2009 | 9 Comments

Sony unveiled its VAIO P Series Lifestyle PC at CES this week and WebProNews was there to get a first-hand glance. Boasted as “the world’s lightest 8-inch notebook,” the device is less than 1-inch thick, weighs in at 1.4 pounds, and is small enough to fit inside a jacket pocket. In this video, the Product Manager for VAIO Product Marketing explains how this notebook can truly change your life.

Xavier Lauwaert first stresses the portability of the laptop. As mentioned above, the device is small enough to fit into your pocket but not so small that the keyboard is inconvenient. The product could have actually been smaller, but Sony wanted the keyboard to be easy to use.

The second area the VAIO Lifestyle PC will change your life is its “ubiquitous connectivity.” Equipped with the latest and fastest version of Wi-Fi and built-in Bluetooth, GPS, and Verizon-powered mobile broadband - this laptop is sure to keep you connected. The notebook also runs Windows Vista operating system.

The device includes a 1,600 X 768 pixel display on an 8-inch LED backlit screen. The battery life is said to last four hours, but there is an option to purchase a higher-capacity battery that would last eight hours.

Pricing starts at $900 for 60GB of storage and goes up to $1,500 for 128GB of storage. Pre-orders are available online at www.sony.com/pr/pseries and will be shipped around the first of February.

It would certainly fit in any standard sized jacket pocket I’ve ever worn.

  3. Mike says:

The larger battery is only slightly larger and certainly shouldn’t hurt the portability form factor.

  4. Almer says:

It’s like when the walkman was introduced. It didn’t actually fit in your regular pockets. They just called up this big guy and gave him a tailord jacket with enormous pockets. Try to take that out of yours.

Fantastic. Too bad “it’s a Sony”. My last Sony laptop almost drove me insane trying to repair problems. I’ll wait ’till Toshiba makes one with solid state memory.

  6. Nice unit, I use Vaio’s at present 4 laptops, but I have to say this is where notebooks are going, with in 3 years simple CD/DVD drives will be a thing of the past. This gets my vote, its handy I just wish they would up that battery life, 4 hours running Vista (which is clunky software) will most likely mean 2 hours… and having a larger battery makes the machine “not” fit in your pocket…! So its good but needs to be improved in that area.

    Good report WPN.
