Most people dwell too much on the “rules” or accepted expectations for sites like Twitter. In this video, Michael Gray points out that there is no right way or wrong way to use Twitter. He says the only right way is when you are getting out of it what you want and what you’re putting into it.
What works for one person or business may not work for you. Therefore, it is important to determine your goals early and to do whatever you have to do to meet your goals.
Michael does give some basic tips that everyone could adopt and practice to build their reputation in the community. They are:
- Be polite
- Make friends
- Start conversations
- Ask questions
- Answer questions
Most people prefer tweets that are not self-promoting. Michael says bigger brands have more flexibility in this regard, but even they should not take advantage of it. Twitter is about engagement and most self-promotions do not encourage it.
The value you receive from Twitter is ultimately determined when you identify your goals and work to meet them. It’s not about how many followers you acquire. What really matters is how many of those followers actually know who you are and are helping you meet your goals.

I love how he makes it simple!
Thanks for the very interesting video. I’ll be re-thinking my use of Twitter in the future – probably narrowing the focus of my Tweets and keeping more of them inline with my area of expertise. Good job!
Twisting twitter to fit your goals is every promoter’s challenge.
Thanks for thses insights. You always learn something new
Sir Learn Alot. Thanks for the info.
blah blah blah.
this guy is talking about nothing, he’s a real expert.
what a waste of 4 minutes.
Exactly!
I was really glad I had Twitter on my web pages today when my internet phone went down minutes before my phone line was to go “live”. I was able to go to my Twitter account and type a quick note to customers to tell them the 800 line was down and to call my cell phone instead. Kept me from losing any potential sales.
Mostly I use it to answer questions that are coming up frequently and to remind them to view the blog when I post. new material and pictures.
Yeah. Yeah. I know the fortune 500 can afford to market and analyze…blah, blah, blah. I NEED tools like Twitter for many reasons and I’m sure that I’m NOT alone. With the world so crazy it is much safer to talk to the masses out there from your computer. Unlike blogs Twitter gives you a chance to give the play by play of reality if you want to promote your skills for instance. Then once and awhile through in your website link. Why not? If you are not doing it thousands of times per day, then it is an open field to self-promote. I think it is discriminating to say people who are not the fortune 500 should not promote. Trying to tell someone about your 30 years of work experiences and growth is next to impossible at an interview or on a resume. Being age discriminated and denied is a reality too, so we have to look for other avenues to make a living. We can’t just sit in the house and wait for anything. What if you are more technical and not very good with salesy type words, then Twitter can work. I’m all for the underdogs who can’t compete with the fortune 500. I want the underdogs to be successful by using Twitter. I know what they are going through. This video was more for corporate than the real world.
New to this but am very interested. Have many ideas and need a little more study. seems simple enough
I certainly beleive in the quality and not quantity theory. It seems that a large number of people out there do not care whether they are following, or their followers are people within the same niche. For some it is just a race to get as many people following you as possible. I am in no rush to build up a large following so it is much easier to be more selective. Just a couple here or there each day is quite enough for me.
I agree with Michael that to build their reputations in social media network we should take participate in community or forums activities. We should ask and answer the question being asked in the forums. Before moving ahead with social network first we should make our profile clear and understandable so that the other members easily trust on us and will not hesitate to add us in their network. Politeness is very important you when talk about social network. Always follow the social guidelines and don’t try to violates the rules.
Twitter may not be the best suited for corporate promotions. Seems it should prosper in the social media, though.
I love the tips Micheal Gray gave in this interview.
I noticed that I’m getting twitter followers when I write about certain subjects related. I suppose it go into a feed and picked up that way.
Twittering is indeed fun, supportive and informative. The way the economy is, I believe it is a quick news tools to get another point of view.
I just love twittering.
Follow your heart!
Twitter works pretty well for us. We have a decent follwoing and get a fair ammount of traffic. I dissagree a little with the self promotion tip. We tweet all new posts on our blog, and this could fall into self promotion. But as long as your giving something usefull instead of just yelling “buy from me!!” then things are ok.

Newbie to the SEO world, this was a great video. Hadn’t thought of Twitter’ing at all.
Will dwell deep into it, keeping in mind the tips by Michael Gray on prefering Quality (targeted customers) Over the Quantity.
Thanks.
Hi All,
There seems to be some confusion regarding SEO. Search Engine Optimization is getting your website to appear as close to the top of internet search results as possible. Nothing to do with Twitter.
That’s all changing now. SEO is not yet connected to Twitter, but as search results start to include Tweets, that may impact it.
Great point about making sure that your efforts and actions (twittering) has a clear goal.
“What do you want your followers to do!”
keep up the valuable work WebProNews.
Excellent tips, and I agree with considering SEO strategies in that you should focus on communicating with others who have the same interests as you. Speaking for myself, I mainly use Twitter to let others know what it is I have to offer, and follow those who have similar interests.
