Understanding Where Social Media and Search Intersect

Posted on: May 22nd, 2009 | 8 Comments

According to Dana Todd of Newsforce, social media content is very strongly impacting search results. In this year alone, social media content has grown to the point that it makes up nearly half of the search results for some queries. That content includes blogs, Wikipedia, YouTube, social networks, etc.

Some marketers are overwhelmed by the social media outbreak and have trouble integrating it into their business. It is important to remember that social media is a powerful force that can increase brand awareness, control reputation management, and more.

To begin, Dana suggests looking into your business structure and target market. Secondly, determine what you need to do to improve your business and how you can engage in it with your target. Once that is done, the question of which social tools you should use should be clear.

Have you found the right fit for social media in your business model? If so, how did you reach that determination?

  1. I use social media to interact with people and raise awareness for my safety and security products. Telegraph, telephone, tell a woman! Social media gives us a chance to discuss the situations in our lives where having non-lethal protection with us made a difference. Thanks for this great article.

I agree with Judy. Social networking is what we have always used and trusted. Want a good carpenter; ask a friend you trust. Social networking is much like that. Our company is new to the Internet and new to social media and networking. We, however, see the value, and will use it. Building trust is extremely important; and if your business is far away from your clients, like ours is, then it is even more important.

    I couldn’t agree more.

In fact, I would take it one step further. Google’s power comes from its ability to gather information efficiently and serve it back to users based on a keyword driven algorithm technology platform. However, no matter how intelligent keyword search becomes, it can not provide the critical ingredient to make search reliable - it can not tell us when to trust the information we are being given.

That is where, social networks change the game. Look at this it this way. In the real world, much of what we need to know can best come from our personal and professional networks because it is, in fact, trusted. We go there first because it saves us a lot of time and fuss. We enlarge the information gathering process only if this does not provide us all we need.

Translate that concept to web world. I believe that we will be able to configure our social networks efficiently to be our first search circle moving out as the needs requires. It makes sense. It’s what we do every day.

Watch out Google - it’s time we are able to trust our searches.
