Arianna Huffington launched the Huffington Post as a news content and blog site in 2005. The site quickly became a strong advocator of community engagement and involvement thus turning it into a social news site. James Smith, the Chief Revenue Officer of HuffPost, credits the success of the site to that social evolution, saying:

“It’s [Huffington Post] almost a social media site with news as the topic of conversation.”

The site logs over one million comments each month.

In the above interview, James encourages other content publishers to push for active communities as well. He explains how implementing polls, thumbnails, and popular statistics can all add extensive social value to content.

Publishers that use social media know that it requires close monitoring. Most of the time publishers closely monitor their social efforts in order to manage the negative response. But did you ever think about how you could also benefit from closely monitoring the positive response? James says publishers have the opportunity to take advantage of the positive surges by further promoting them.

    It all makes sense and in particular with news sites, people really want to be able to have a voice (i.e leaving comments etc) But can the same be said for websites in other industries…information sources, photo galleries etc?

Social sites are great for reaching out to those that may not have been aware of your business or websites..the problem I have found for many that may not be in a business that is highly desired by many of these sites is keeping a profile active and avoiding building a large network then find you get deleted off the site.

    And it’s even more prevalent at Facebook that will delete a users profile in a heart beat but yet as I recently discovered FB seems to be highly selective in who it does delete..seems they may have a “who you are status” agenda where they do not delete major players Pages or Profiles but others they have no problem deleting..matter of fact I would like to see FB called on the carpet on their policy of who to delete and who to give a pass to that are similar profiles or Pages that they tend to leave alone..

    I am one of those who has had a supposed FB Page setup as a business Page that got deleted 3 times in one month, the last time last week while a Page by a major name(I won’t name in the same industry & category) and virtually identical to what I do in many respect never gets deleted..I am not the only one to recently discover this may be happening as it has happened to others I know as well to the point we do not understand it to be any thing but discrimination based on your celebrity status, name and public notoriety.

  7. Engaging and interaction seems to be the magic formula for social sites.Users feel they are valued for been given the opportunity to participate. Unfortunately for me so far my site is passive.Though,it is primarily a classifieds site but can still have some dynamism added to it.Am being convinced every day to do it.This video is yet another pusher,thanks

  13. Interesting how the new media being converted to social news media builds traffic and popularity. People do love to comment – but I find that it’s more to complian or argue – not like the blogshere where comments are ussually a plus not a negative.
