What Comes Next in the Search Industry?

Posted on: June 15th, 2009 | 4 Comments

Although it will continue to evolve, the search industry is not going away. According to Rebecca Lieb of Econsultancy, we can expect to see many changes over time, but we should also be aware of the trends in the near future of search.

Coming as no surprise to most, social and behavioral aspects are at the top of the list of trends. Social media is quickly becoming a large part of the business sector and the search industry is no exception. Rebecca says social and behavioral aspects will play a larger role in determining search results because search engines will use those aspects to become smarter and return better, more relevant results to the searchers.

Rebecca also foresees apps playing a strong role in the future of search. She said, “…30 percent of Google searches in Japan… are coming from mobile devices.” Rebecca does not believe this statistic indicates that users will use the search engines on their mobiles, but instead search through apps such as Urbanspoon, PosiMotion, TapIt, and more.

In the longer term, we will see the larger impact that social media has on search. Rebecca says that search will consist of creating media, monitoring that media, and then creating additional optimize-able media. The new media will include videos, images, audio, books, and more. While the job of the SEO will become more difficult and involve more listening and monitoring, the needs of the searcher will be more easily met.

Are you ready for these changes? What are you doing now to better prepare yourself for the future? How do you see the role of an SEO changing?

  1. Another great interview. Also, I can see how search is getting bigger and better every year, maybe every day.

I think there should be a simply and more affordable ways of submitting your site. And not just affordable, but also 100% effective. I believe Google is still the best, but they are too expensive for a small business owner. Yahoo is among the more affordable ones?

  3. I’ll tell you what is up in line for Search Engines (obviously a guess) – Soon enough websites like facebook and twitter will jump into search engine race. Some sites will start sharing revenue with users too in form of points.

Right now there are billions of pages on millions of websites and users need a better way of getting to the information, therefore I think soon enough we will see search results being customized by these search engines (unlike they are automated now). This search engine thing has become too much overblown anyway.

I can’t see the video here somehow but I saw it somewhere else.
Very cool, thanks for sharing this kind of things :)
