MOM Proves Value of Social Media

Posted on: June 18th, 2009 | 9 Comments

I think it’s safe to say that social media has taken the world by storm. It even plays a large role in the business sector. There is however one problem that businesses have with social media: they want quantifiable results. Many businesses mistakenly believe that their social campaigns are not working if they cannot see growth in dollars.

According to Tarla Cummings of Location3 Media, the amount of money generated from a social media campaign does not indicate the overall value of the campaign. The true value is seen over time and is in the reputation of a brand. Tarla recommends using the MOM acronym approach for social efforts: Monitoring, Outreach, and Measurement.

Monitoring is primarily about listening to what’s being said about your brand on blogs, forums, or social networks. As you listen, also understand and apply what people say.

The outreach step involves identifying positive and negative influencers and reaching out to both of them. Negativity can hurt a brand, so reach out and try to change the negative experience into a positive one. Reach out also to the positive influencers to encourage them to do more.

Measurement is the last step and, as evidenced above, is the hardest for most. The truth is, it shouldn’t be as difficult as everyone makes it out to be. There is value in social media, but it comes in many different forms. Businesses simply need to determine what their social media goals are and work toward them instead of focusing solely on a monetary result.

The convergence of the information sector comes to a merger between the bussiness owners, media and public. As the internet continues to permiate the social networks, differnt bussiness models will need to be activated. The main cause of the recession is linked to the stronghold expandature of the world. Social networks, such as twitter and the like, are the mirror responces to the change that has taken place already more developed, such seen in the economic and political spectom.

Social traffic does not pay and never has paid. People trawling Digg or Twitter type sites simply aren’t looking to buy anything. They don’t even click on ads and if they do it’s poor traffic and Adsense slaps you for it.

Social traffic is killing time and that’s your lot. It’s why you can buy Facebook ads for pennies.

As Tarla points out though, if you use social media the right way, it can be a great tool for creating brand awareness. You just need to know how to manipulate it.

  7. I use Twitter like many other business owners to socially market my safety and security web site as well as raise awareness for personal safety vigilence. Monitoring, Outreach and Measuring sounds like a good idea especially when we should be looking for other results besides monetary. For me it’s increased safety of those I speak with whether they use my products or simply learn something on my forum that made a positive difference in their personal, family or business security.

Thank you Tarla for your information.

My blog, launched last January, is being met with rave reviews from my readers who know about it. As far as I can see, it is different from the million’s of other websites out there as I am not trying to sell anything but my humorous, positive and insightful stories of my life here in Aspen as I raise my three boys.

I have worked very hard to get it linked from the Social Networks but it has been an arduous journey.

Patience is a virtue but one that I don’t have time for as each month my husband and I grow closer to the possibility of foreclosure on our dream home in the country. The sooner I can attract reader’s the sooner the advertisers will be knocking on my door.

    Do you have any suggestions?

  9. Good stuff Tarla, selling this to businesses is tough I agree, but all business and individuals need to be part of social media.
