In a recent interview with Laura Lippay of Yahoo, she explained how all the essential elements of SEO could be applied to a site and yet it still might not rank well with the search engines. Her advice included creating a compelling product and devising a strategy that would generate buzz and links.

Rand Fishkin of SEOmoz also talked with us about ranking factors, but took a different angle. Experts are quick to offer advice on how to get your site to rank well, but does their advice match the data? What the data shows is what really matters. For example, Rand says the experts say H1 tags are very important, but actual data shows that they have a very low correlation with rankings.

So what advice does Rand offer for ranking well? He says titles tags, anchor text, on page keyword usage, and social aspects are all important factors. Social aspects are hard to measure, but Rand points out that they influence ranking with the search engines in an indirect way. He also agrees with Laura that there has to be a distinguishing factor involved in order to outrank competitors. Taking it one step further, Rand says the product not only has to be compelling, but it also has to give people an incentive to want to link.

Because SEO is constantly changing, you need to look at the data to make sure that your efforts match your goals.

Are the traditional ranking factors changing? What new factors are now included in the game?

Soooo…do I leave in my w3c or take it out?!

    I’m so confused…

  5. HI,

Yeah!! Mr Rand is awesome in SEO, I personally like his research on rankings. W3C debate is a long debate and it has been there for a long time. If u do W3C its better its like a SIGNATURE!!!

  6. I play with the keywords on my page and have found they affect my ranking. I’ve also found that there is a fine line between good keyword usage and overusage.

    Thanks.

do you think changing meta tags occasionally is recommended for good ranking???

  8. Seo Guru says:

Having watched the video, I would have to agree WC3 although useful to make sure no major issues on a page, does not make a big difference in rank position. Relating to the mete title, this does make a huge difference, as we recently discovered when one of our clients changed there meta title without telling us, this changed there rank position from 8th to 300th and was proved when we put the original meta title back and the site reappeared back in 9th position.

  9. Iago says:

What about reciprocal linx with website directories? I am in the process right now of setting up a list of linx back to various directories using a piece of software I found recently that helps speed up this process although it is still done by yours truly manually. I hope that I am not wasting my time. That said, time wasted can be a learning experience, at times. Ha. Ha ha.

  10. The point Rand was making about W3C compliance is that absolute compliance is not required to get your site to perform well in the search engines. The advantage of making your pages fully compliant is that it eliminates any errors that might prevent a search engine from properly crawling the page and extracting the content. But small violations like failure to include an ALT attribute on an tag or improperly nesting block and inline elements is not going to prevent a good site from ranking well in the same way that such errors don’t prevent browsers from properly rendering the page for users. The video actually included a great little hint. Checking the ‘text-only’ version of the cached copy of a page is a good way of insuring that Google is seeing all of the text on the page. Creating standards compliant code is always best practice and is your best choice to insure that users see your pages the way you intend for them to be seen, but it is not a panacea for good rankings.

Focus on the main point of the interview: Make a great site that provides a valuable resource for users and work on getting links from other quality sites. That’s how to succeed in the search engines, and ultimately have a successful website.

  20. IBL Builder says:

I do worry, from a quality POV, that on page content is secondary to being able to wing a few high authority backlinks with good anchor text. It just increases the scramble for those links, but hey I’m happy!

I loved the video. I’ve contemplating adding video to my sites. I hear it’s untapped, plus it helps search engine rankings. There are even video advertising companies out there fighting for my business. Some companies even give free accounts and assist with campaigns like http://www.adwido.com

  25. Great tips,

Finding sites for links can be a bit of a problem!!! especially if its more about a wide variety of domains linking to you!! its easy to find 10/20 or 30 sites that provide good link building and content uploading but we’ve got to get more creative to reach a wider audience.

I find that some Ezine are useful as people purchase the blog’s you have uploaded thus more sites are linking back to you.

    Cheers for the tips guys

  27. wc3 validation can lead to good results in search engines? I doubt that’s the case. I think most sites don’t have much wc3 problems.
