A lot has been happening in the search industry over the last year. Google is still the dominant player, but Yahoo and Microsoft are continuing to fight. Is there hope for the other engines?
After Yahoo rejected Microsoft’s offer to buy the company last year, many people seemed to give up on the search engine. Since Carol Bartz took over the reigns at Yahoo, expectations of the company’s future have been mixed. Some view it as an impossible battle, while others view it with optimism. Is the optimism because they think Carol will seal a deal with Microsoft or because they think she will turn the company around? Carol is initiating many changes to the company including an upcoming re-branding effort.
Next is Microsoft who recently rolled out its latest search effort: Bing. Microsoft has long wanted to compete in the search arena and hopes that Bing will allow it to do so. Although it is still too early to tell, initial data reports have been promising. Nielsen Online found that on Bing’s first day, it came close to surpassing Yahoo Search for the second spot. WebProNews spoke with Hadley Reynolds, an analyst with International Data Corporation, who said Microsoft’s biggest challenge would be getting users to switch from Google. He went on to suggest that Microsoft needed to continue to innovate the user experience if they want to grow Bing’s audience.
What does all this mean for Google? The other engines have a long way to go to catch up with Google, but does that insinuate that Google is untouchable? There have been some reports that indicate that Google and even its co-founder are slightly unnerved by Bing. Despite its vast success, Google has also been feeling heat from the government over antitrust concerns.
There are many questions regarding the future of the search engines. Although it appears that Google is not going anywhere for some time, I think we can all agree that the war among the search engines is definitely heating up.

Any major monopoly is bad , Whilst I like google and it performs well. For any one thing to control the(internet) has got to wrong ang and I feel somewhat dictated to?
Nice talk about the search industry!
I dont think that ‘per country’ is a big advantage.
More and more people are gettting tired of google invasive tactics.
At least many other search engines are stabile.
Google is only on my computer because many others use it and i have to check it.
As soon google falls i will delete it as fast as possible.
(and that drop will come soon).
Search engines giants competing among themselves to produce best results has got to be a good news for customers. having said that, even though Microsoft seems to be improving its search algorithm is launching new product (Bing) , its hard to think of a dramatic switch from Google to Bing.

I couldn’t agree more with what Piles had to say.
I wonder sometimes if Google realizes how much they really control the destiny of web site owners. With just one flip of a switch or turn of a dial, they can affect a tremendous change on the range and placement of a site’s serp.
Not trying to game the system, but yet you want to remain friends with the search engines cause they do send you your lifeblood. But trying to remain friends with the mighty Goog is like trying to be friends with a manic depressive bipolar schizophrenic psycho.
(can you tell I’m frustrated with Google?)
Google big advantage is their “per country” search!
This makes it really the only global search engine.
I have mixed feelings about what is happening between the search engines.
Although competition is good, when search engines begin to constantly change their maths to out do each other, they are playing with the lives of web site owners also.
One’s ranks can go up and down like a yoyo, and trying to master google is bad enough, as anyone will testify, but google on adrenalin fighting back out of fear, is just down right horrifying to even consider how to maintain any sites serps at all in such a scenario, and I think that is what I am starting to see.
