There have been multiple reports that Twitter could replace Google. Twitter has quickly risen to become one of the most powerful sources on the Web. In 2008 alone, Compete found that the microblogging service grew 752 percent. Do you think this might make Google, the long-standing Internet giant, a tad-bit nervous or jealous?

Chris Brogan says, “…I think Google is a bit envious. I think they don’t know what to do with it all yet.”

Does this mean that Google is letting their feelings influence how they return Twitter results? There have been some rumors that Google may let the “authority” of Twitter users play a role in their results. For example, a celebrity or a well-known “authority” such as Chris Brogan could rank higher in Google results than an average Joe user.

Do you think Google is jealous of Twitter? If so, what do you think the company’s next move will be?

Competition is always good and only good when played fairly. Can’t imagine what will next come down the pipe.

“There have been multiple reports that Twitter could replace Google.”

    Yeah. ok.

  4. MrAdVenture says:

That is like asking if apples are afraid or oranges.Of what possible concern could Google have with Twitter?
    Is Ford scared of Cessna?
    Is BurgerKing scared of Wal-Mart?

Those makes as much sense as Is Google Scared of Twitter.
If you had asked if Facebook is scared of Twitter you would have something to discuss.

Since they are two totally separate things mentioning them together like is just an attempt at attention grabbing headlines-and it worked-I am here! :)

  5. Clif says:

Yes, I’ve not yet grasped the concept of Twitter being any sort of threat to Google. Google is a well organized search engine I can trust to return relevant, credible (mostly) results on exact topics or products I am interested in. Twitter is a chatterbox of random noise by millions of people with attention deficit disorder. Sure, if I’m looking for the latest buzz on what people are eating for breakfast at any given moment I’ll go there. But if I want to research the history of breakfast, the best places in and around central Texas to eat breakfast complete with directions, reviews, and other related information, I’ll go to Google. I just did a search on Twitter for “sunglasses” with the pretend notion of buying a pair and absolutely nothing returned in their search results was valuable to me. There were several tweets by people selling sunglasses in the mix of completely random BS, but none of it was ranked by any sort of qualifying criteria…why in the world would I trust a tweet as a consumer?

    • Jimisan says:

Clif, I totally agree with your anology. I would rather rely on relevant search results from Googling for final decision that from Twittering which are full of noises/nuisances. I don’t really think Twitter can ever replace Google after all.

  6. Zookii says:

Common … web is not just “twitting”.
Google is giving us much more than Twitter.

  7. i highly doubt Google will be presenting Twitter results anytime soon. Even if they did whose is to say that Twitter will allow Google to index their Tweets?

  8. bullshit says:

    Oh sure
Twitter will replace Google and Google are afraid of twitter
bing with replace twitter and twitter is afraid of bing
Paris Hilton will replace Obama and Obama is afraid of Paris Hilton
Rats will replace elephant and elephant is afraid of rats
    Finally Cowdung with replace bullshit

  9. I don’t think it is easy to replace “Google it” with “twitter it”. Google still rules as no 1 search engine.

  10. Me says:

Are you asking stupid questions for the sake of asking them? To get some attention? Stop writing stupidness and come up with some real content.

  11. I use Twitter mainly to socially market my safety and security web site so I know it’s powerful and growing but I don’t really think it will scare Google.

  12. Changa G says:

Twitter replacing Google makes for good debate material and each side will have great benefits as well as flaws. But to not recognize Twitter and other social apps like it would be downright disrespectful, just at monthly growth totals for the past year alone and the numbers speak for themselves. I recommend using both as they will definitely help you with what you are trying to achieve. Twitter is excellent at searching for current “trendy” topics and Google is still #1 for straight-up research and search results.

Wasn’t it a public offer from Google to buy twitter? If I only think of the Youtube example, seems like Google will buy anything that has a potential to grow “uncontrollably” large :)

  14. YES …. Google is one of the giants like AOL or Microsoft who are afraid of competition and always like to remove their competition by buying those successful new born companies which bring new concept and become popular. These companies need to be confident and not sell their companies. They need to keep themselves in the competition and keep improving their services or products by continuous research and development.

  15. wong_udik says:

yeah, with twitter search we will now about what are people doing in the real time, this is about people do. and google, its quite different!

  16. Chuck says:

At one time Microsoft was trying to buy Yahoo to compete with Google. Maybe Microsoft will try to buy / merge with Twitter to become more powerful than Google. Google still has most of the advertising on the internet. There is plenty of room for Twitter and Google.

  17. Kevin says:

Twitter will wither and die once people get bored of reading useless information. Who cares what most people are doing at any one time. Get a life.

  18. Paul says:

Hi, thanks for your thoughts Chris on Twitter. We are also seeing referring traffic from Twitter increasing along with other business opportunities.

  19. So far Twitter is just a fad. It consists of nothing (Seinfeld?) It has already become boring to many and then the scams and spams. Ugh!

  20. James says:

Are you kidding me? I can’t find anything useful on twitter except blog feeds.

Twitter might have Google on the “pulse of the planet” concept… but honestly… Twitter works best as a news aggregator. Jmo…

In other words… the links nofollowed and most redirect to another domain anyways.

Google isn’t doing anything to “punish” those results. I am fairly certain Twitter is punishing itself and quite frankly the internet community as a whole has replaced their own property and their own long term link equity value with Twitters “time”.

    I don’t get it…

    • Twitter replacing google, I dont think so. I agree with the first poster, James. Its just a news aggregator. If google buys twitter it would only be because they see potential in it. Big companies by out small guys if theres competition that is unseen by the company. I use google to search. can twitter do this, yes. But it would require more regulation to cut down on spam. I use google for advertising. Twitter’s market is unreliable and uncategorized. Facebook, now thats my advertising venue now. Ill come back to google later. Plus twitter and google is like comparing grapes to apples.

  21. Of course Google will want to find a way to give their customers a similar experience – unless they are not… If google can come up with something that will really rock our world, there is no doubt that google will survive the “attack”. But does it matter? Not really..

Twitter is not google, and what Twitter is able to do, is only possible on a small scale. Twitter will not b able to do real time search on the entire net. It is simply not possible, so by nature it has to be a smaller and different version of search than the one google has.

Both systems have their pro’s and con’s – when we try to compare, it is also impportant to say that comparison may not even be applicable.

  22. Msi Mzantsi says:

I am not a fan of Google BUT the suggestion that Twitter may replace Google is a bit ridiculous!

Come on guys – are we running short of topics for discussion?

If you take into account business fundamentals and technology on which Twitter and Google are built, I fail to see how Twitter can replace Google – the most likely scenario is that of Google making Twitter “disappear”!

    Next topic please!

  23. Alex says:

Never. Twitter is something for the moment. Soon will die. Like yahoo, myspace and others… 50% of twitter is spam.

Good joke… Twitter replacing google? =))))

  24. Tim says:

Yes, Twitter can’t kick Google’s tail with a simple decision, entering search. The news alone would send Google’s stock diving. Yes, 50% of Twitter posts could be spam but what’s priceless is the word “Twitter” in every news anchor’s mouth every second of the day. Yes, Twitter can kill Google. The word Twitter is the most mentioned word ever. The service is used worldwide everyday and celebrities use it.
