The stability in the future of search has recently been put into question due to the impact of social media on search. Since people are doing more and more searches on social sites such as Facebook and Twitter, does it mean that social media will eventually replace search engines?
Both Twitter and Facebook have launched real-time search engines within their service offerings, and the major search engines are still struggling to enter the real-time search arena. Heather Dougherty, the Research Director at Hitwise, said:
“I think this [social media] will become integrated as part of search but certainly not circumvent search entirely.”
Based upon this information, it is however fair to say that social media has changed SEO permanently. According to Hitwise data, the number of visits to social networking sites exceeds the number of visits to email sites. As a result, Dougherty suggests that marketers increase their efforts with social media in order to reach their customers better.
How have your SEO efforts changed as a result of social media? What role do you see social media playing in the future of search?

Social media for the most part is still a peer to peer following area. Large SEO projects still must focus on organic areas such as Google, Yahoo and Bing. Google still holds market share and that will remain a constant for companies looking to gain ground with organic traffic.
Social media includes a very “viral” area of marketing, Google itself is the choice of end users. Social media marketing is an add on to SEO
Great commentary. Lucky. I never win anything either. How did the video turn out?
Thanks for useful information
very impressive post comments here
please shut up.
Ha ha!
thanks good work.
I learned a lot here, thank you
Personally, I find social websites totally boring and feel that they are a craze – a bit like ‘Big Brother’. As most of the posts are benal, I am sticking to SEO.
Social Media has changed the SEO permanently!
Not quite, but it certainly is.
Well, personally, I do not bother muh with S.M. sites. I do tweet a little but I do not have the time for Facebook and others.
We use both and are watching the trends for our search results on http:/www.vipgiftsandbaskets.com – social media most certainly is up there right now – but how long will it really last. I believe that they are both equally important right now – to stay on top we feel we need to ride the wave of whatever new trend / fad comes along.
I think facebook and twitter are going to take over searching but SEO is still a powerful force.
I share the comments expressed by Grace Core, Social media marketing is an ADD ON to SEO, it does not, nor with it ever replace SEO.
Social Media is a powerful tool for the people to get connected. It can never replace SEO
God bless SEO & all who sail in her!
Social networking is social networking, and SEO is SEO. They impact on each other but are separate subjects
Utter tosh.
twitter and facebook are simply glorified chat sites.
They offer no insight into searching whatsoever.
The woman on the Video does not know what she is talking about.
If you want to use twitter to find information be my guest. Guaranteed you wont find what you are looking for. Mind you thats what Media people want anyway. They want you to find what has been paid for the most rather than what is most relevant.
I agree with charles 100%. No-one wanting serious information would bother with twitter – unless they were a twit.
I guess you guys are going to be sat scratching your head wondering where it all went wrong at some point in the future.
Take your blinkers off and join the 21st Century.
I have 2 sons aged 21 and 24 and neither of them knows anyone who uses Twitter.
I am too old to be bothered with boring tweets, but, apparently, they and their many friends also find it boring and totally without interest – a fact that I find very enlightening.
What age group does Twitter appeal to?
I think sarımsak hasn’t noticed that webpronews has started nofollowing the comment links.
SEO is nowhere near being dead so I think it’s a tad premature to ask that question. Heather is cute though
Pity about the nofollow tag though. I Just checked, they went sitewide with it, with old entries as well.
That was a lot of time and work for a lot of us, and they just sliced the only benefit many of us got. Some of my comments took 30 mins or so to prepare properly, even though the site is way off topic to mine, I enjoyed writing and making comments, because you then convince yourself it was real work. Now it offers no return for effort
so just a leisure activity.
It was fun though, but now it’s time to get back to work.
Perhaps very small businesses will use the facebook platform to advertise, but Twitter ? Please …. these ‘executives’ are clueless …
I am a single mom and lost my job about 3 months ago due to a layoff. I was scrambling to find work and came across online paid surveys. I thought why not try it well to my suprise I made almost $2000 dollars last month doing surveys from home and I didnt have to spend a dime up front.
This has saved my house from foreclosure and I wanted to share this story so that others with the same plight might do the same thing. You can work from home and make a living it does take a while to get up to $2000 a month. I made about $500 my first month and this is month 3.
This is a legitimate paid survey opportunity with no upfront money needed.I have detailed exactly how I did this on my webpage here http://www.surveymoney.x10hosting.com you may have to copy and paste that but check it out I detail exactly how to this for free.
The beauty of Search Engine Optimization is that it requires both effort, expertise and a great deal of interest and curiosity
SEO will not die and wither away – it just changes focus
New tools and new strategies are used and tried all the time
Welcome to life and the life of the worldwide web
It’s not dead. I am running a site for Online Shopping in UK, Europe with Price Comparison, Reviews and Ratings of products. SEO works for me.
SEO could not be dead because I am still getting tons of traffic to my sites.
I totally understand what you are saying about “branding.” Google has plummeted the unoriginal brand sites recently.
