Earlier this week T-Mobile announced the national retail availability of Google’s myTouch 3G. After anticipating the device for quite some time, our very own Mike McDonald immediately went out and purchased one. So, how does it compare to Apple’s iPhone 3GS?
Mike teamed up with Taylor Pile, who is also of WebProNews and who just happens to be a new iPhone user, and the two conducted a brief comparative analysis of the devices. The phones have many similar features such as the 3.2 megapixel camera, browser view, touch screen, and more. There are however, significant differences as well.
For example, Mike and Taylor downloaded an identical application on each of their phones using WiFi. The iPhone downloaded it in 1 minute and 9 seconds, while the myTouch download completed in 17 seconds. When downloading an app on the network, the iPhone completed in 26 seconds, while the myTouch took 1 minute and 8 seconds to finish. We should note that the iPhone was on a 3G AT&T network and the myTouch was running on a 2G T-Mobile network.
In spite of the comparison, Mike is still sold on his myTouch and Taylor still favors his iPhone. How do you think the phones compare?

Would not the apps have different coding for each the iPhone and Google’s myTouch and thus the apps will be different sizes therefore the download time for your time test would be inaccurate? I think you should have done a test of a website instead – I believe that would have been a better speed test.
They did – they both pulled up Google rather instantly.
I totally agree. How much time it takes has to do with the size of it, and since we don’t know how large either app for each phone is, that’s a very unfair assessment for sure. The other thing is, even though the iPhone doesn’t run 3 apps at once, it does mulit-task using 2 apps. You can get your texts while you’re on the phone, or you can look up contacts, use Notes also while on the phone. Because the guy is a new user, he doesn’t know enough to fully show what the iPhone can do. Google’s phone is okay for a phone, but let’s face it, it’s not an iPhone, nor can it do what an iPhone can. Next time, they need to get someone up here that knows what they’re talking about.
Iphone multitasks 4 apps. Mail, phone, web, ipod. Fyi.
Txt app, isnt running in background wen u get ur allerts. Its not a backgrounded process. When you hit view on the txt alert, it opens the txt app then closes it when you exit. Phone runs constantly and even airplane mode wont shut it off. Its a constant. Mail, web, and ipod can all b run at once and you have to force quit them or manually wipe your memory to get them to stop backgrounding.
How can u not know this sparky. Being an “old” user you should know this. Lol. Either way. Iphone was my first smart phone and i wouldnt have it any other way. I understand the shortcomings of the phone but coming from a samsung upstage last year to a 3g, and this year to a 3gs, the phone is nice. Ive seen win mo and dont really want to comment on it cause pro winmo peeps here will rip me a new one. Im sure if i went From my upstage to a winmo phone, id be talking trash about the iphone. Just b thankful we have such powerful phones. I remember when i got my first computer and it was a 133 mhz packard bell. Lol. To have a 400mhz (3g) and 600mhz (3gs) in my pocket pushing speeds that destroy 56k modems back in the day, just blows my mind. No one will ever find the perfect phone, only the perfect phone for them. I never used apple products before iphone and still wouldnt buy a mac, but do understand the lure (if u have the money).
Your right Sparky, I am new to the iPhone. It’s my first smartphone ever truly. My last phone was a Samsung A727, Google that bad boy! This was quite an upgrade for me
So yea, I’m still figuring it out. It did my best! My light Saber is bigger and sounds better, what else could you ask for?
The ultimate guide for me, to a new device is does it make you do things better – the iPhone is amazing
iphone better of course. google os is still not finished, and it common linux.
the iPhone is an excellent phone. they did look at a pretty bland website (google.com) and since the mytouch is 2g vs 3g the iphone would have cleaned it up. there are OS related differences and the thing about multitasking that everyone is all up in arms about is that it takes additional ram to do that with, and you’ll never be texting in the midst of a game, so in reality the game runs in the background and you get killed off while sending your text. Guys get real
Was fun to see real people doing a real test and in reality performance-wise the iphone wins once again. Screen real estate is a big deal, especially when it comes to watching movies which you did not show, or music videos which you also left out.
Another thing was texting, you did not cover that portion of things.
Other than that…good job.
Mike
What about if you’re in the middle of texting & the phone rings?! Or watching a video/listening to music & you get a text message? That’s multi-tasking too! I would like to know if an sms arrives whilst listening to music, not only once I shut the music app down (assuming that’s how it works?)
I love the MyTouch, it’s easy, quite accurate, fast and works with my provider. The My Touch is FABULOUS!
“the mytouch is 2g vs 3g the iphone would have cleaned it up.”
Uh, no. The myTouch is 3G, where are you getting your info from?
T-mobile doesn’t offer 3G for their location. So it was downloading on a 2G network (as you’ll notice in the video)
yes, that’s correct. T-Mobile doesn’t have the 3g network here…yet. Something was also strange about the download times for the WiFi and the 3g/2g comparison. My iPhone 3Gs is typically very fast when connected to WiFi. Not sure what happened there……
I love the cut and paste feature on the iPhone. It is handy for taking info from one email and pasting it to another email. Or I can copy Web content I want to email to someone. Can you cut and paste with the myTouch?
Why does the MyTouch need a task manager? The only time I needed the task manager on my PC was when the apps lock up and need to be forced to quit?
Even though it looks smaller when you place the myTouch on top of the iPhone it looked thicker. Was it?
Does the myTouch do video?
It kind of looks like a rip off of the iPhone. What is your take?
Hello,
I am a Magic(=MyTouch/US) user in Canada.
I’ve just switched from blackberry to Magic just about a month ago.
Before switching to Magic, I’ve also done some extensive research between iPhone and Magic(mostly I use for my business. So it was very important).
But for the time being, I will just respond to some of the questions you have.
Yes. I can cut and paste with Magic for both email and web content.
About the task manager(they call it “taskiller”)…Personally, I wouldn’t know what I will do with my Magic without the task manager. It simply helps to extend my battery life at least more than 3 times(in the beginning, it didn’t even lasted for a day). I know I am a heavy user and a abuser too.
When I close app with Magic, it doesn’t really close the app. With Android, it runs the apps automatically when there is a network change, wifi on, and etc.
Therefore without killing these apps, they just keep consuming the CPU resources hence shorten the battery life.
After I learned about the Taskiller, I installed it. Guess what? Now my phone battery life is lasting at least 2days. Without using an internet, one time it lasted up to 4days. Pretty impressive. For your info., I also use some useful widgets and other software to control power.
Lastly, Yes….Magic does video so I am assuming myTouch does video too.
So far, I favor Magic a way more than iphone.
Hope this will help
You don’t need a task manager with the Iphone because it can only run one task at a time.
what about the keyboard on the mytouch?
I like my ritary phone. I dial. It rings. Someone answers. We talk. Simple.
Billy Bob, LOL!! Sr Citizen?
I email allot. I like the keyboard and screen size on the iPhone over the Mytouch. I have a difficult time with the Mytouch keyboard. Anyone else?
I had the iphone since it came out and recently switced over to the mytouch and havent looked back. You can do so much more with Mytouch, in regards to music, ringtones, multiple apps at once…hands down for me the mytouch wins.
Okay, let’s even up the playing field a bit. So many iPhone pinchers responding, let’s hear from a person who owns a mytouch. If you were honestly paying attention to the video you would have noticed a couple of things. 1.) if the iphone couldn’t “clean up” the mytouch over wifi, what would make you think that if they were BOTH on a 3g network (the mytouch was on EDGE, which is 2g, at the time of the download) that it would not have suffered the same fate? it more than likely would have. Does the iPhone have a bigger screen? yes. More applications? Yes. Can it multitask? NO. can you customize the iPhone like you can with the mytouch (wallpaper, themes, icons, widgits, music players, applications, screens, keyboards, list goes on and on)? OF COURSE NOT. Have people made it publically known that they are dropping their iPhones, as well as ATT, in favor of going to tmobile..getting a mytouch or a G1…and not looking back? uh…. hate to say this but… YES!!!! must be a reason why. face it, iPhone is like a dictatorship, where as the Android driven mytouch, g1, and hero… is more like a democracy that shows that you have a choice in how you want your phone to be to you.
Lol your retarted iphone 3gs technically can multitask. Performing 2 tasks at once is still multitasking. If you jailbreak it, you can see what processes are running. Plus, you can change themes and keyboards and everything if you jailbreak your iphone, which is ok.
The Palm Pre is a 1st Generation phone and it’s the Labron James of phones.
Nope, sorry the palm pre isnt even a pro player it is stuck trying to graduate from grad school. haha i think the pre has potental but it needs to go to practace more insted of skipping school. the pre right now isnt even the tim duncan of phones.
ive had all of the smart phones you can think of, palm pre,g1,my touch, storm, cure, iphone 3gs,moto q, moto q9m,palm centro, and i have used all 4 of the major networks, VZW,AT&T,SPRINT,T-MOBILE. and trust me i have a pluthra of good things i can say about each one, also a few gripes about each of them. and now my phone of choice is the iphone 3gs. No i am not saying that it is the best all i am saying is you will need to find a phone that works for you for what you want it to do.
if you like what you have keep it if you dont change it. but for me its 3GS.
I disagree with their view that these are the 2 best phones out there right now. I think they should also compare the Palm Pre to these 2.
I think iPhone is better.
Interesting to see the comparisons.
I picked up a G2 earlier this week (my MDA – ‘pocket-pc’ was fading.) I am working on a longish post, updating as new experiences/discoveries occur. Note that I am a systems person so my perspective is most likely quite different than a casual/normal device user.
I have no iPhone experience so my comments tie in better with functional comparisions with the MDA – and I will be evaluating the newer Windows Mobile phones later this month.
My biggest gripe: poor/no documentation (other than little fold-out sheets with pictures – ok for basic operations but not helpful for a real evaluation or real information on how the devices works at a system level, i.e. sharing files; yes, relatively easy to figure it out, however nice to know potential gotchas before they happen; Should users be required to search the Internet/message boards/support forums to locate basic info? NIMO)
Gripe #2 – very basic apps simply not included (for a multi-processing device – I expected more; yes, you can ‘getta-app’ but IMO more should be included, i.e. a notepad program.)
Do I ‘like’ the phone? Yes.
- browsing is a much nicer experience than via the MDA
- relatively easy to use basic phone feature
Will I keep the phone? Not sure at this time. I’m on the fence when it comes to using a Google-only solution to store my personal data (schedules, email, etc.)

Dale
But am loving my N97! It rocks with the new Firmware.
Well i think not even a single company manage to come up with a better phone than iphone. Apple should be awarded to come up with iphone it has changed the concept of mobile phones and now they are going to dominate the computer world with their new tablet pc which is hopefully coming out next month . Check this out http://www.domesticutilities.com/apple.htm
I think microsoft should be worried coz if mac becomes user friendly than it will be a big problem for Mr Bill Gates
Mr. Gates couldn’t care less. Besides, APPLE wouldn’t even be around if Gates hadn’t bailed them out with a ton of cash a few years back…or don’t any of you APPLE pervs remember that? Look it up on your iPhones.
hi, there is no boubt that the iPhone is the Best!.
On our web you can find an interesting fair test.
Such over-protection from some over a PHONE!!!
Why compare a 1st Gen phone to a 3rd Gen phone?
The Iphone is a fine phone with great marketing. Leave off just enough each year to put out the Exact Same phone 1 year later with a couple of new Basic options and then sell the Same phone the Next year with 2 more Basic options…it’s Bernie Madov all over again!
Now with the First Gen Android Bar phone you’re doing just fine as well. The over-the-air updates are Very convenient and with both Donut AND Eclair due before year’s end, THEN let’s compare Androids to Apples…!!!
Til then no more Iphone for me…my new MyTouch is Perfect for me and the masses…and my used Iphone goes to Goodwill…
Well, if you like your new MyTouch, good for you. But, when trying to compare the actual hardware, they need to have some people in the video who really know what they’re talking about. The guy telling us about the iPhone had no idea what it can really do. Even though the iPhone doesn’t run 3 apps at once, it DOES run two, which is multi-tasking. You just can’t run 2 online at the same time. And where do you think the “touch” technology for the MyTouch came from? Yes, that’s right; Apple. After creating the technology, Apple is leasing it to other phone makers for a fee. So, even if you don’t choose an iPhone, Apple is still making money off of you. The main thing that most people don’t get is that the iPhone is not a phone, it’s a computer with phone capabilities. All the other competition is just a phone with apps. This is why all these comparisons are useless because there is only ONE iPhone, and either you have it or you don’t. You may not like AT&T(and who does?), but you certainly can’t blame your problems on Apple’s technology. They are still the leader with a vision and that’s why EVERYONE is trying to copy THEM. What’s really going to be interesting is when Apple’s contract is up with AT&T, and people will be able to get an iPhone without switching from their phone company. Let’s just see how many people end up with an iPhone then.
Careful sparky, your fanboy is showing. Apple did not create touch technology. I’ve been using phones with a touch screen years before the iphone came out. If your talking about capacitive touch, it’s still a mute point. I can use any object including my fingers to make selections. The only thing that capacitive touch is good for is to keep you from accidentaly operating the phone while in your pocket. Not that it matters since I have a lock on it. Another thing you are way off on is the iphone being a computer with phone capabilities. It really is just a fancy phone with apps. I’ve been able to do just about everything an iphone can do for years, and I didn’t have to upgrade my phone 2 times to get basic features such as MMS and “cut and paste”. Let’s see…
6 yr old phone? check.
Touch screen? check.

Hmmm, seems to me that the iphone isn’t as special as people like to make it out to be. All they really did was sophisticate what was already out there and market it in a slick shell. I need to make something clear though. I don’t hate the iphone, in fact, I’m very fond of it. Anyways, enough stiring the pot.
I like the iphone because it is very well supported, it’s quick, and easy to use. On the other hand, I like the mytouch because I’m a huge fan of open source and customizing. Both these phones have their pros and cons, but what phone doesn’t? A person should use both and then make decision on what fits their lifestyle best. Personally, I’m going to wait until I can get my hands on the new storm 2 before I decide between the 3 for my next personal phone.
Sorry for going off and rambling. It just really pisses me off and amazes me how people are so defensive and proud about something as trivial as a cell phone.
Well Well Well no one is talkin about N97 here. I beleived that N97 is better then iphone i have bought a N97 through http://www.domesticutilities.com/n97.htm they had this phone free on monthly line rental of 40 pounds and i can tell you that i am proud to have this phone and its better then iphone. Iphone is nice as well but because iphone is cheaper to get and almost every one got it thats y it lost its value.
The link for free n97 is this http://3mobileshop.at/domestic?CTY=37&DURL=http://threestore.three.co.uk/dealsummary.aspx?offercode=18M300D109
well iphone users and mytouch users…word has it that sprint is buying at&t so i guess in the long run the mytouch wins. supposedly something that at&t was trying to stop since 2008 and now is in the works. just in time too because in 2 years the iphon will be available on other networks and no longer exclusive to at&t. so i would say buy the mytouch and in 2yrs when your agreement is up u can see if you want the iphone from verizon, sprint or tmobile
The jury is still out for me. Both phones have benefits.
What going to make my mind up is one further app which still doesn’t appear to have been released and that is Tom Tom. My current phone is also my sat nav. I don’t like carrying too many things.
The iPhone has been around for a while and its Apple but that can’t be the whole reason to select it. The mytouch has buttons which seems a little old hat compared to the iphone. OK Aesthetics aren’t important as most of the time my phone is on my desk or in my pocket and its never on show in front of clients.
The charger adapter is a good point. Being able to charge anywhere is handy and I have in the past plugged my phone into other peoples chargers when I am out and about.
I will keep looking from afar until I see product that I can’t refuse.
I think iPhone is better and you can compare the prices for iphone here.
i say iphone is better in every way one way is that the iphone has its own internet and the mytouch does not and for the app iphone its easyer to find them plus youtube pictures and all the stuff only thing mytouch has better is the plug to charge and the battery remove but the my is also heavy so i say the iphone is best that guy with iphone didnot know how to use it i got the iphone 3g and i will never trade it for any other phone.
no doubt. the mytouch is better. ability to run multiple task sessions on it’s linux based os. several of the guys I work with have the Iphone I am the only one with the mytouch. everyday they try to find new things I cant do or modify my phone to do that their’s can’t. everyday they are disappointed. from someone who was very impressed with the iphone and is familiar with the product, I’m telling you GET THE MYTOUCH!
Dude. Jailbreak your iphone using redsn0w or purplera1n app. You can set themes, change icons or anything you visibly see on your phone, and you can run multiple apps w/o closing out. With a jailbroken iphone you can do virtually anything imaginable & it is completely customizable inside and out. With that said the iphone by far puts the mytouch to shame (only if jailbroken).
I phone is awesome. Takes better pictures and videos than a lot of cameras.
i owned a mytouch 3g and its way better than the iphone, super cool!!!
I am waiting for this mobile Nokia Aeon its the best upcoming phone. http://www.domesticutilities.com/pmg.htm
Just a quick comment. If you have a mac you can make your ringtones for free using Garageband and any non protected song in iTunes. Just something cool that I discovered with Garageband. I have made several ring tones from this process and I can edit it so that the right amount of the song plays.
Correct me if I’m wrong but, not sure if you guys tried and noticed that when playing Video’s from youtube, the Iphone’s Video quality depends on the network you’re in at the time, It only shows high quality videos when you’re using wifi. Whereas the MyTouch/G1 you get an option to play it in High Quality even when you’re using 2g/3g network. I think that puts another Point there for the MyTouch.
ok first of all jail breaking your ipod is such a bad idea, you can really damage it and it freezes ALL THE TIME. overall id say mytouch is better.
iphone doesn t even have an inbuilt a2dp and mytouch has every thing it connects to every other device in few secs…it has a crazy os(android) and the coding is neat never hangs….
To be fairly honest with you. Its not the operating sysytem people love about iphone. Its the softness and touch sensitivity system people like. Many brands try to compete with iphone but of no vail. Nokia came out with N97 and it was a flop. I am not sure about HTC but i am sure it is no where near iphone the upcoming Nokia’s Aeon http://www.domesticutilities.com/aeon.htm might bring problems for iphone with it. So lets see who wins slow and steady or fast

Typically I don’t create on posts, but I would like to say that this internet site definitely convinced me to accomplish so! Many thanks, very excellent send. Normally I tend not to create on sites, but I would prefer to say that this website actually forced me to accomplish so! Gives thanks, really beneficial web site.
The mytouch is great! the iphone is great! It really just depends on the person…
Does anyone know which sort of video files are supported? I keep in mind the Intuition only might dl 3gp using opera mini. I downloaded the twist ap, perhaps that’s the problem? How can I watch movies from sites apart from youtube? Which file sorts? Usually I am given the choice of 3gp or mpeg4. Cannot get both to work. Thank you on your time! Damn I want I used to be eligible for the improve to EVO!
Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
Maybe you could change the blog name title Video: Which Is Better, Apple's iPhone 3GS or Google's myTouch? to more suited for your subject you make. I liked the post nevertheless.
I just like the weblog, but could not find the right way to subscribe to obtain the updates by email. Are you able to please let me know?
In spite of the comparison, Mike is still sold on his myTouch and Taylor still favors his iPhone. How do you think the phones compare?
I was thinking about this publication and thanks to you i know more about this.
Tony Robins sucks! Just how can any person like him?
It doesn’t make sense to use LEDs anymore with these things out!
I lately came across your blog and have been learning along. I thought I would leave my first remark. I don’t know what to say except that I have loved reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very frequently. Anunturi Romania
Thanks for sharing i really enjoyed it.
Just got a used Mytouch 3g…lovin’ it. No data plan…use wifi.
