According to Chris Brogan, the President of New Marketing Labs, we have all been playing around with social media for far too long. It is his hope that users stop being amateurs and really get serious and take it to the next level.

Looking at the last Presidential election, Obama reached out through social networks to spread his message. On the contrary, McCain stuck with traditional methods and called home telephones with his recorded message. Obama’s message was distributed across Twitter, Facebook, blogs, and more, and he won as a result.

Brogan believes all users should apply that model to get the message out since there is so much good that can be done. For example, actor Anthony Edwards is utilizing social media to raise awareness and funds for a children’s hospital in Africa. Social networks are powerful tools to get needed messages out.

Up to this point, the use of social networks has been sloppy. However, Brogan believes that now is the time to use these tools to get the message to the right people. He says: “It’s time to get over being a tourist. It’s time to put a claim down and do something with it and really tend it.”

  1. I agree to most things Chris Broghan said. But he just missed the point when he told Facebook is not viral as twitter.

There are clear points in Facebook where you can go viral. These are the Fan Pages and FB apps.

Now, FB is a much more private place than twitter. I don’t think it HAS to go viral as twitter.

  3. Yes Obama won over the hearts of kids who told their hovering helicopter parents who to vote for and all the US has been able to accomplish since is we get to say we are no longer a racially divided nation. Whether or not the person is qualified to be in office no longer matters ….just so long as they are popular…remember all the trauma caused in high school because you weren’t popular?? Are nations political system will dive further into the toilet it is now…..thanks Twitter for nothing…..ohh we did manage to enslave ourselves with billions more in taxed for the next few generations but who cares as long as the guy in office is / was popular.

  12. I absolutely agree with Chris Brogan when he says “It’s time to get over being a tourist. It’s time to put a claim down and do something with it and really tend it.” Social networking technology is taking off in a big way, we have only recently started to see the true global impact it can make.
