In the ongoing debate between SEO and PPC, Michael Gray of Atlas Web Service is on the SEO side of the table. Although he utilizes both organic SEO and pay-per-click, he says SEO is a better long-term strategy.

Gray puts SEO on top because, despite the initial investment, he believes it is very cost-effective. PPC, on the contrary, requires a monthly payment.

In addition, Google has made some changes that make SEO efforts even more important. The search giant recently opened personalized search to everyone, therefore making it vital to get the first click. At this point, Gray doesn’t think Google is including PPC results but said it could change.

With those developments in mind, Gray advises others to utilize both organic SEO and PPC. He said, “You should know how to use both… but then, pick your specialty of where you’re going to go.”

There’s nothing like organic seo results.. just can’t be beat. But, if you really want to take a bigger slice of the pie then by all means use the PPC for everything your website is lacking in SEO. Why promote what the SEO is already doing… you can but it’s best to get each part of the pie equal as possible ;)

The best advise is to develop a site using SEO principles from the start. First create a well researched keyword list. Then determine the scope of your site using this list along with your online objectives and link bait articles/videos/ebooks/etc. Code the site with organic SEO techniques and then launch. Now you can use PPC until you see your organic listings, then test conversions before stopping the PPC.

Never develop a new site without starting with SEO.

  5. PPC is good for research then build a site using the results. Just don’t use Google.

  6. ARTiSAN says:

Its obviously best to do both especially if its a new site. Use PPC to drive traffic to the site from day one then use this data to determine the priority for SEO.

Many people start with PPC and don’t conduct any SEO as it doesn’t produce quick results. However, SEO is better for the long term so its important to start SEO as soon as possible after PPC.

I’ve addressed this same question on my blog, http://www.seozoo.biz/blog/organic_seo_ppc

The short answer is “Both”… SEO and PPC (Pay-Per-Click advertising) are two separate (but related) strategies having the same objective, to drive visitors to a website. Incorporating SEO and PPC into your marketing mix is the secret to online business success. These strategies complement and reinforce each other!
