Does Your Business REALLY Need Twitter?

SiteLogic isn’t sick of Twitter, he’s just tired of marketers telling their clients they HAVE to be there.  Same with Facebook and whatever other ‘next big thing’ comes down the road.

At the 2009 Chicago SES, Abby Johnson caught up with Matt Bailey who shared his perspective on social media marketing and it’s relative importance to the overall marketing mix.

Bailey feels like businesses feel an unwarranted pressure to ‘get someone on Facebook or Twitter’ without fully understand why they are doing it – aside from the fact that some marketing expert told them they needed to.

    I agree. Too many people have been talking about twitter as if it’s a one-size fits all solution. I haven’t seen much use for it for some of my clients and it probably wouldn’t be worth the time investment since people don’t usually use twitter to search for products that aren’t timely.

    Totally agree – for 90% of business – Twitter or facebook isnt going to help at all.

    I have never had much success with twitter myself.

    I don’t think we should be that tough and say Twitter doesn’t work.

    Instead I do believe that people don’t really know how to use twitter effectively. It’s not just a spam tool but a communication device I’d say to keep in touch with your customers.

    FINALLY!!!!!! Someone who gets it! I am sick of being beat over the head from social media “experts” demanding everything should be on Twitter. Not true. It has to fit your overall strategy. He’s right about Linkedin. I’ve actually gotten business from it.

    This guy knows what he’s talking about!

  11. Finally someone has said what everyone else has probably been thinking for the last 6 months! Twitter has been lorded about as the next big thing, but if you have nothing to say to your target audience its a bit of white elephant

    Really true ! Productivity has limits. It becomes very exhausting to spend time researching algorithms when it has already been established.

    Every business must consider whether social media will be beneficial to their specific business or not. It’s one thing to be on Facebook, Twitter etc, but quite another to convert your traffic/followers from such sites into paying customers.

    I have seen a lot of sites saying Follow us on Twitter, as of yet I have not made any attempt to use this type of media and need to understand how is it used and measured?. I have never been asked by a client to specifically post any content on Twitter either YET.

    I shall wait and see.

    I share the sentiment with a lot of folks, that you can really get too carried away with this. And in my field, tai chi, it’s about DOING stuff, not just writing/talking about it. If I attract customers, colleagues and acquaintances that just spend all their time on social media, then how are any of us ever going to get anything accomplished??

    Hi Abby, what an outstanding interview! I for one AM sick to death of hearing about how you ‘have’ to tweet this, tweet that and tweet everything.

    I mean it is nice to always have someone to talk to clients about but frankly people certainly forget about the end deal here. Results…

    How can we get results via social media, SEO, PPC, PPV and all other sources of traffic?

    What is the strategy??
