One of the hottest spots at CES 2010 was the area surrounding the Boxee Box. The device made by D-Link, took home 4 awards at the show including “Best of CES.” WebProNews spent some time with Boxee to see what the winning device was all about.

Boxee Box is a media player that helps users organize all the media they already have. In addition, it is equipped with software that includes thousands of episodes and movies pulled from legal and public sources on the Web.

The Box comes with a remote that can operate Boxee primarily from one side. However, the other side has a full QWERTY keyboard that makes it easy to search for content and browse the Web.

Zach Klein, the Chief Product Officer at Boxee, told WebProNews that Boxee changes the way we think about television. He said:

“The future of television is about watching anything you want, any time you want, on demand.”

The Boxee Box will be available in May with a price point of “around $200.”

    its completely amazing!

we must start thinking in terms that boxee suggests a change in the perception for television.

as i advance on the internet market television seems as it is going to die eventually, now this product completely changes the game. now medium and smaller businesses will be able to advertise on the web.

new channels with lower budgets may appear and last if they make attractive content.

the “lazy” viewer will become an active one, social media will come to life as more and more contect will flow through bookmarks , tweets, digg, facebook etc.

one thing is for sure, when google finishes its mobile rebolution, google television is coming up… if its not in the making as we speak.

  5. Really cool toy!
I have to get me one as soon as it’s available in the market. This is really what I call media connectivity. It really deserved the award.

I love this. Now, when the news people say coming up, we won’t have to wait an hour before we see the teaser story. News media will be forced to present better material for the duration, or the garbage will be ignored. Excellent! Take the power away from the producer, and empower the end user. *****

the funky Box is a media player that can play a wide variety of local media files, as well as a large and growing array of online content. Local files can be accessed via the SD slot or USB ports, and the list of compatible files is comprehensive. It reminds me a lot of the Xbox 360 chatpad accessory. definitely in my wish list.

  9. Hello. This is kind of an “unconventional” question , but have other visitors asked you how get the menu bar to look like you’ve got it? I also have a blog and am really looking to alter around the theme, however am scared to death to mess with it for fear of the search engines punishing me. I am very new to all of this …so i am just not positive exactly how to try to to it all yet. I’ll just keep working on it one day at a time Thanks for any help you can offer here.

After I heard about Boxee, I installed it on the computer in my living room (which is conveniently attached to my TV). I gotta say, the Boxee software is pretty sweet. The interface is clean (sorta MAC-ish) and the fact it aggregates info from IMDB on your local media into a formatted setup is nice (though it’s not perfect–it mis-tagged one movie). Also, I had issues with the frame rate of Netflix on a separate computer (though this may be a hardware limitation. That being said, Netflix played fine in IE on the same computer). All and all, I am digging Boxee and am using it on a regular basis. If you’re looking for something that’s one part browser and one part media player, I would recommend giving the Boxee software a shot.
