Duplicate content issues are unfortunately, a continuing problem for webmasters. According to Shari Thurow of Omni Marketing Interactive, the search engines will likely pick the wrong pages if you let them determine which are the best pages on your site. To prevent this, she recommends that webmasters be proactive when it comes to duplicate content.
In order to be proactive, you need to be consistent. First of all, be consistent with your information architecture. Secondly, link consistently to the same URLs. Thirdly, send consistent messages to the search engines. By sending conflicting messages, you will be giving the search engines the opportunity to choose which page will show in the search results.
Thurow says that even though a page could have several differences such as color, order of words, etc., the search engines will not detect differences unless the content is dramatically different.
“Whenever you think of duplicate content, you can’t think of it only from a searcher perspective, you have to think how does a search engine see it and how can I make sure that the search engines and searchers get the best page on my website,” she pointed out.
In regards to the canonical tag, Thurow believes it is both a blessing and a curse. It is a blessing because it allows users to easily filter sites with content management systems. However, she believes it is a curse since it can be abused.

nice post, now I know the three tips above:)
Great advice on how to avoid duplicate content. However, I can’t help but wonder, let’s say, 3 different marketers who are selling the exact same product (i.e. a laptop with the same model number, specifications, config, etc…) Would that be consider duplicate content by the search engines? Or, as long as the item description comes from different websites, it should be okay? And how would Google deal with plagiarism where for instance, a blogger “borrows” written articles/contents from other bloggers? Just wondering…
It was a really interesting interview and I enjoy it a lot, no doubt. But still I remain asking, did I get what I expected when I clicked the link that read “How to Avoid Duplicate Content?” I still feel the question is yet unanswered. You be proactive, maintain consistent information system and all, but still where it comes the ways and techniques to avoid duplicate content?
Couclude from the tail of the interview when Shari Thurow talked about the canonical tag,I think her avoiding ways may be associated with use tags properly.
Homeandbody, yes it’s still duplicate content and google will still penalize you. Just because you are selling a similar product doesn’t mean you can copy other websites content. You can retrieve general info from the brand at their website, but you shouldn’t be copying blogs. You’re just taking the easy way out ,that just ends up hurting you and the blog you copied from.
In most cases you can copy from the brand’s actual company website the general info and specs about a product without a complaint in most cases, but you should never copy any other website other than the actual brand’s site or you’re at risk.
Great info! I was still wondering about my home page being all exerpts of the content with thum-nail photos of the full pages. Does Google concider it dup content or diffferent from the full content pages?
The above information is true but i have tried duplicate content on several sites and all are ranking well.
I would suggest just change the Meta’s for each pages of your website. this will work.
Thanks,

Great information for us newcomers, stops us getting our fingers burnt. i certainly won’t do somethings I was thinking of doing.
One of the most important conclusions and also the most common,
is the misuse of XML sitemap genretaion.
when you dont know how to use a sitemap generation tool you will end
up submitting URLs that should not be indexed. we always recommend to avoid the use of an automatic XML sitemap generator supplied by the company who built the CMS.
use your own trusted external tools and make comparisons on a monthly basis to track lost pages issues and other problems that might appear in order to point the search engines to the pages you want to index on your site.
Very good intel for helping clients understand useablity issues and searche engine marketing. As web developer we build wordpress websites using WordPress CMS. The biggest risk is that the clients write their own content which raises duplicate content issues even using AAA rated content management systems.

Thanks so much for this info!
It has helped me so much! =)
This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
