The waiting game is over for Apple‘s much-anticipated tablet. Yesterday in San Francisco, Apple CEO Steve Jobs revealed the new device called the iPad.

The iPad looks a lot like the iPhone, only larger. Jobs said, “Using this thing is remarkable. It’s so much more intimate than a laptop, and it’s so much more capable than a smartphone.”

Notable features of the new tablet include:

- Dimensions: 0.5-inches thick, weighs 1.5 pounds, and 9.7-inch display
- Powered by Apple’s A4 processor
- 10-hours battery life; One month on standby
- 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB of Flash memory storage
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled
- Built-in speaker and microphone
- Digital compass
- App Store application included

Some models of the iPad will have 3G. Apple and AT&T are offering two data plans without contracts. The first includes 250MB of data per month for $14.99, and the second includes unlimited data usage for $29.99 per month. These 3G versions will range in price from $629-$829, and those without 3G will start at $499 and go up to $699, both depending on storage size.

As expected, the iPad comes with an e-book reading application called iBooks. Jobs praised Amazon’s Kindle but said Apple hoped to refine that model.

Despite all the hype regarding Apple’s iPad, a tablet computer is not a new concept. Jobs admitted that tablets have not done well in the past but believes Apple is up for the challenge.

The company will begin shipping the iPad in 60 days and the 3G models in 90 days.

Do you believe Apple’s iPad will succeed?

I was excited to hear about this. That was until it was actually shown…

I have to say that I’m very disappointed with Apple’s latest effort. Really, how much thought was put into this thing? All it is is an upgraded/larger iPod Touch. Bad call on this one Apple. I don’t see this product becoming very popular with the masses like the iPhone & iPods where when they were released.

This is not a good product! Unusable for writing and devices. And for my spine?

  4. I needed a new phone and tried a Blackberry. Hopeless. Tried an Iphone (my son’s) tremendous. But I wanted a reader and nearly bought a Kindle. Finally I was finding my existing laptop too heavy for transport by plane on the European cheap flight carriers so I was delighted to hear about the iPad that has all of these features in one bundle. I’ve placed an order for a 64g version.

Maybe it is a larger version of the iTouch but then it was pretty obviously going to be something like that. Maybe you’ve got another idea?

Take an iPhone and iTouch, look at a Laptop, think about an ebook reader and try and design one product that has ALL these functions, is easy to use, is pretty,is light and transportable, has hundreds of apps already available AND has Apple’s reliability written all over it. For me it looks like the iPad is it.

@Lingano; How can an iPad or similar product possibly effect your spine?

I’ve never been a fan of anything that Apple has ever made. The MAC, ipod and iphone have been overpriced toys for tech heads and yuppy knobs that could easily have replaced with less expensive atlernatives. But the Apple tablet has me very interested.

I view it as a personal TV that I can actually use in my ‘lap’ without suffering from leg cramps.

It does not support Adobe Flash…and that is a conscious Apple corporate decision to protect the Apple iStore applications from competition, not an accident, so just exactly how useful is that going to be without Flash? On top of that, apparently there is a trademark dispute brewing in Japan on the use or misuse of the apparently previously ‘protected’ iPad name. So, sports fans… Let The Games Begin!

Apple have simply gravy trained on the back of the iPhone/iPod Touch… Let me think we could make a bigger version of the iPhone/iPod and called it iPad….. Genius!.. Not!

The usual Apple$ rip off starts again (it’s funny how the tide has turned from being Micro$oft to Apple$).

This device is NOT multi tasking unike other non Apple$ table PC’s, In fact it shouldn’t be called a Tablet as it’s not a computer. It has no flash, it has no camera, it doesn’t support Flash, so surfing the web is always going to be limited (unleass you use the rip off Apple store of course!)

Apple will wait a few months after they think they have sold enough to warrant them hailing the next big addition say…… a camera or a tv addition module and try and rip you out of another $700.

Apple are simply trying to rip you off by selling you a larger iPhone, it’s not going to work, Apple you keep pricing people out of your greedy little mits, I wouldn’t mind paying Apple for NEW technology (like the iPhone) but this is nothing new?
