Driving Traffic with Domain Names

Posted on: March 4th, 2010 | 12 Comments

According to Monte Cahn, the Founder and President of Moniker, finding the right domain name is key in driving traffic to your site. At SMX West in Santa Clara, Cahn talked to WebProNews about several issues surrounding domain names.

He said specifically, “It’s not all about SEO and SEM strategies, but without the right domain name, you’re really not going to be successful on the Web.”

Since there is so much talk of 301 redirects, how do people know when to use them and when to build up a domain name? Cahn says people should always use 301 redirects for various misspellings of the brand’s name.

On the other hand, he advises companies to build out subsites for their products or services. By doing this, companies can take advantage of link juice and use the links and referrals to drive SEO value.

One of the biggest mistakes brands make with domain names is not being proactive when they release new products or services. Cahn gives examples where both Microsoft and Apple released products before checking on the availability of the domain. If companies wait until after they announce their new product or service, chances are the domain name price will skyrocket.

Is your domain name driving traffic to your site?

The company brokerages network will give you access to some large pool of people who’ve the information about companies for sale and buyers or investors searching for any company venture. By making great use in the information you’ve, you may be cutting a provide and make a handsome profit out from the transactions.

  2. What I dont like, is the way in which companies like SNAP can corner the second hand domain market. There should be an impartial, non profit making organisation who broker these domains, and they should be made available more easliy, and more transparently, than is the case now.

  3. Hey, I think your article is very informative. I found it via Bing. Will bookmark and come back again

I think he made some interesting points. So many people including myself, don’t pay enough attention when choosing a domain name. I do however believe that if you are good enough at link building it doesn’t matter much the domain name.

Not sure I agree with Monte – but to launch a product, or even a part-time business without securing the domain is crazy – how can usually intelligent guys do it – incidentally – allthegooddomainnames.com is still available!

The statement is true but his further explanation could be interpreted in the wrong way.
As I understand it he makes issue with the fact that before promoting a new product/business you need to get a domain name with the name of that product within the domain name – to drive traffic successfully to that product.

This would mean creating a new website for each product with the product name within the domain name and separate promotion for each site.Of his own admission he says that all the good domain names are already taken.

I believe your resources are better spent in establishing a brand name – for instance:

    McDonald’s is not called Hamburger.

Hertz is not called Car Rental.

    FedEx is not Mail Carrier.

    Kodak is not Photographs.

    Microsoft is not Computer Software.
