Some people would have you believe that search engine optimization is a dying art, and depending on how you define SEO, that may be true. But at OMS 2010 in San Diego, Greg Jarboe, the president and cofounder of SEO-PR, explained that other definitions of SEO make it very much alive.
Here’s the thing: as Jarboe admitted, “The era of ten blue links is dead.” People also can’t expect to optimize a page by just changing keyword metatags anymore. Indeed, much of what so many SEO experts learned ten years ago has become irrelevant.
The trick is that expanded search, which can be defined as “search wherever it happens,” is now important. Facebook, eBay, and YouTube users all perform searches, after all, and their attention is valuable. So Jarboe concluded, “If you focus on those kinds of fundamentals, then SEO is alive and kicking.”

I could not agree more with Jarboe that onpage optimization (meta tags, etc.) is on it’s way out. I still think there is a place for quality backlinks to play a significant role in determining your SERP results.

Hahaa… The gulls.. That’s great.
Anyway… SEO has of course evolved over the course of the years, however I would say that it is definitely not dead. I also think that many people confuse SEO and online marketing, which is the biggest misconception we see.

I agree with Brian Jarboe, that SEO in the old definition is dead but a new SEO has emerged. Much of what you see today is “off page” content, sites, microsites, social media backlinking to sites. Search engines like relevant content and if you do the off page homework correctly, everyone wins.
I couldn’t agree more with everything said…Adapt or die! 10 years ago is eons ago with regards to the Internet, so it’s just common sense that what worked 10 years ago is no longer viable, or at the very least, has been expanded upon.
You guys really make lol with those birds…Especially at the end where it looks like he’s eating a burnt thumb!
SEO is SEO if your purpose is driving traffic to your site. SEO is more an Abbreviation than Acronym, pardon the attributes. It’s not search engines anymore but the door to door method should do.
My first thought as we started moving toward a more social search world, it was going to hurt and kill us financially. What it’s been is meeting new people, real hard working types who may not have the prettiest site on the server, but have honest content/services and speak to people like people. It’s been great being able to relax a little in the meta tags and science so much. I like stimulating people’s brains better.
SEO, not just for search engines anymore.
Keep it Str8!

SEO is just a long used term that some of the general public may relate to at this point, although many still don’t even know what SEO stands for.
Not certan that it is of such great importance to create a WPN video on the subject.
The ultimate definition of SEO in today’s market is: driving traffic and creating sales/business via a client’s internet presence utilizing whatever effective methods work. Does it really matter what it’s called or that the longterm catch phrase SEO is still being used?
I agree with Greg, some of SEO’s ‘old and traditional’ practices are dead, but search is still very much alive!
We will always be searching somewhere, but not necessarily a search engine anymore. Optimizers need to expand their horizons to accommodate these other highly searched and targeted websites, because that will help our clients convert better.
I haven’t actually begun counting the number of bald people being interviewed but it seems they are in the majority. I’m starting to feel good about myself (getting ready for my own interview).
Anyway, good topic. Personally, I think the concept of SEO should be clarified, however. I’ve been calling it VO (visitor optomization). Of course, When I say I’m a VO expert, some folks a little bit older than me think I may drink too much.
Keep up the good work!
A lot of words without any new (at least for me).
Still, your page should be optimized by the old standards.
Maybe PR is no longer a feature to be concerned about in google but it may still be useful in yahoo or bing or ask or …
SEO itself is organic, that is, it evolves with the changing times and circumstances. And as long as people search fir items on websites via search engines, there will be ways to optimize websites so that they can be more easily found by those searching for them.
I have many hotel clients and strangely I believe that SEO is not the real traffic generator. Its probably the reviews and blogs all over the net that actually generate bookings supplemented by SEO
Maybe we should call SEO ,,,traffic drivers ????
A very interesting video – there’s definitely been a shift towards users relying on websites other than search engines, since the rise in popularity of various social media channels. Web users have started to rely on these sources more as a means of community recommendation. I recently wrote an article about how to optimise your presence on some of the more important search engine alternatives (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Digg, StumbleUpon) – I’ve suggested we use a new term for this practise – Combined Search Optimisation:

How could SEO be dead? as long as Google is ruling this world SEO is alive. Even though people are using real time media (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube) – people aren’t searching these places to find a service in their area. No chance if someone was looking for a house cleaner in their area would they go on to youtube and look for some videos on house cleaning. Straight to Google everytime, that is why they own 90% of the market.
I have seen my site jump fom 47,000 to Results 1 – 10 of about 9,420,000 for the big advert. GOOGLE WOKS for me.
I think SEO will still be SEO when there are billions of searches in Google each day and you need to be at the top of Google to be found.
Redefined SEO is utilizing all forms of search in today’s Internet world. Youtube is a search engine. I always go to Youtube to “search” for useful information.
If it’s dead then what happens to SEO when the mobile revolution starts to make a big impact? And that’s not to suggest that writing articles and helping the web evolve will go the same way as the film in two years’ time.
SEO will never die as i think. It’s like beauty. Years ago it was enough to put some paint on cheeks and woman appeared more beatifull than others. Later they have to work on themselves more and more.
Good posting. Will you please write far more about this subject.

Finally, I found the information I was looking for. I have been doing research on this subject, and for four days I keep entering websites that are supposed to have what I’m searching for, only to be discouraged with the lack of what I wanted. I wish I would have found your website sooner! I had about 30% of what I needed and your web-site has that, and the rest of what I had to have to complete my research. Thank you and I will report back on how it goes!
Would you like to increase your google ranking? http://fa.by/c1e585
Nice Post, waiting to see more on this!
Awesome info over again. I am looking forward for your next post:)

Hi
I’ve been sitting here for two years now watching as the major players avoid giving hard working people a break without PAYING the “higher echelon” dues.
I am old school and do understand that one must pay a little to get a lesson. That’s basic old school even when you are learning to play billiards.
However after getting past all the “Black Hat” no no’s and conforming over a thousand pages to basic SEO standards one would think one would have made a little headway.
Well…spend a couple of years working 24/7 until you drop and watching the moguls simply change their algorythms to avoid the Non Paying participants has become my daily point of laughter.
Coming from the days of BBC, Telix and programming that existed before Windows existed I am reasonably sure that somewhere there is still room for Freedom of Information that can be shared on the internet without buying some already fat cat another bubbler for his yacht.
Now…
I can accept reality as it is today. I can adapt to fit the changing trends.
I can also hold the belief that hard work, good content and especially networking with other hard working honest people will eventually win out the day.
Changing hats in the past has gone along with the changing weather. Black’s fun, White’s almost too pure to find, Gray doesn’t even keep you warm. I’m thinking I may finally end up wearing a Green one just for my own peace of mind.
Have a great day everyone and thanks for this forum.

Constant attempts to game the Google algorithm have rendered search results less useful than ever before. However, having an SEO ‘get you to the top’ without substantive changes to content is, perhaps, no longer a viable option. Instead, relevant content and getting subscribers to come back regularly seems a smarter way to go. But dead? Not quite yet.
