WebProNews has extensively covered the ongoing saga regarding the FTC and regulation of online advertising. Continuing our coverage, we recently spoke to Jordan Mitchell, the Vice President of Data Intelligence at the Rubicon Project, to catch us up on the latest news around this situation.
Last year, the FTC told the industry that it need to self-regulate. The Commission also said that it would step in with regulation if the industry did not do it on its own.
Many bloggers and others in the industry expressed concern about the potential government intervention since they feared the enforcement of the regulation would be difficult and not done right. Because content has exploded online and has been largely supported by online advertising, Mitchell said many have raised alarm out of fear of innovation being halted.
At this point, the government has been conducting roundtable discussions with publishers and advertisers to try to reach a solution. In addition, the industry is scrambling to speed up self-regulation.
As for the future implications on online advertising, Mitchell actually sees a positive effect. He believes there will be an increase in targeted ads and the right balance between user transparency and control.

If the goverment starts to dip their noses into the online affair of users, advertisers and such, it would cost them another trillian dollars to enforce it as there are MILLIONS of users that have adapted to it.
Enforcing any rules they make up will cost them more to enforce than to pay off the entire USA debt!
It’s also a known fact tha some of the top Internet gurus got rich by squeezing out the little guys, and THEY are trying impliment rules small time folks are supposed to suck up to.
Good luck with that theory.
Nah…make it simple, if ya like it, buy it, if ya don’t…go somewhere else.
Scary, when did I leave the 21st century.
The FTC should not be allowed into the regulation of sales transactions in cyber space. The mere fact that there is conversation between marketing professionals and regulators is a “red flag”
Want a preview of what can happen, look what the FDA did to the health and wellness industry as well as the regulations it has imposed on major disease and illness.
It will be interesting to see how this dialogue turns out, will you settle for “Big Brother” or “Big Bully”?
Call your congressman or tell your senator to keep the FTC out of the cyber marketplace!

last time I checked we live in a free country. let the consumer buy what they like, or not buy what they don’t like…..i think all the government cronies should move to china if they want to regulate (enslave the people). Free enterprise rules!!!!!! Why change what works? i think washington is becoming a bunch of control freaks. hope it turns out well.

Why just blame Washington? I think the whole of US is become more stupid than ever. Why else spanking a child by his parents would amount to child abuse?? Back to topic, I have read about the FTC stuff on a number of blogs but I love the WPN version best.

I am totally with you on that!

Well, one good thing is that advertising may become more targeted, but I’m not really sure what the long term impacts of this will be.

And nobody told you the government does not have the necessary funds to crack down on the millions of online users as well!

We truly need a whole change in philosophy in Washington- smaller and honest.
But I am afraid that is a contradiction.

Why should corporate advertisers and their proxies track what we’re doing on the Web without our consent? I welcome the FTC’s help with privacy issues. I’d rather have an opt-in system over what we have now.
i am not completely against government intervention but how far should we let them go. how long before they run the whole show? i think self enforcement by the industry would be a much better solution. make the cpa companies, affiliate networks, paid traffic networks, etc.. demand more out of it’s publishers/advertisers. also i agree we should be accountable for paying taxes on online income.. but i NEVER want to have to worry about FTC reps crawling the internet and deciding on a case by case basis if my site is up to their standards. imagine random FTC website audits… nah not for me

I agree that we need more regulations if it can hellp with Privacy issues.
Just look at the iphone/ipad which can track every movement we do.
I think this is a good thing. People won’t be able to blatantly lie anymore so it’s all good.
