Qik, the mobile video company that Skype recently acquired, just launched a new iPhone app at SXSW. Bhaskar Roy, the co-founder and SVP of Qik Products for Skype, spoke to WebProNews and pointed out how the app makes it easy to connect with people from almost anywhere.

“It enables various ways for friends and family to connect,” he said.

The app allows users to place live video calls with two-way chat. In addition, the app has a social element since it lets users instantly capture videos and share them on sites such as Facebook. It also includes a live feed so that users can see what videos their friends have been posting.

Another aspect of Qik is that it leverages cloud computing for storage and processing. Video support for mobile devices has long been a challenge since video tends to drain batteries. To overcome this challenge, Qik puts the hard processing on servers, which allows the cloud to become a “lifeline” that prevents battery issues.

According to Roy, Qik’s goal has always been to enable video interactivity through mobile devices. Qik believes it has achieved this goal in its mobile video solution.

While the paid version of the app is currently available in the App Store, the free version is still pending.

This might be good, but is certainly inconsistent. Fring did excellent Skype video, they do it on their own as well, without problems. Please let Fring back onto Skype video until you (Skype) has at least an alternative. Even charge for it if you might but do not eliminate the service!!!

  3. Useful information. Lucky me I found your site accidentally, and I am stunned why this twist of fate didn’t came about earlier! I bookmarked it.
