The debate around the AT&T/T-Mobile merger seems to be growing daily. Despite the opposition and the lawsuits to block the acquisition from both the U.S. Department of Justice and Sprint, supporters continue to speak out about the benefits the merger would provide.

Former Congressman Rick Boucher, who is also the Honorary Chairman of the Internet Innovation Alliance (IIA), is among this group of supporters because he believes the deal would be advantageous for innovation, the economy, and job creation. He spoke with WebProNews and said that the merger would not only achieve broadband deployment, but that it would also help fulfill the President’s goal of having 98 percent of the country have access to broadband.

For these reasons and others, he believes that it will be approved. Do you agree?

  1. Frank says:

People will always speak up in favor of monopolies if they think they can profit from it, Geez, read a company charter some time. What happened to all the others who say competition is good and would be advantageous for innovation, the economy, and job creation. A bunch of people who may or may not have a clue as to what will really happen, but if history is any guide, it won’t be good.

  2. Brad says:

Sounds like another way big brother can invade our privacy. This is what we need to be fre off is more ways the government can impead on our personal lives.

  3. More jobs, how exactly? Ever merger I have seen and been part of reduces jobs over the common areas and departments, ie: finance, support, marketing, managers.

This is moving into a monopoly and reducing people’s choice in the free market. The acquisition of T-Mobile forces 50% of Montana to only have on mobile provider option.

Also, I noted that Rick Boucher mentioned that 70 democrates are behind it, what about the republicans?

  4. Boyd says:

I don’t buy this guy’s contention at all. In addition to jobs being eliminated with the merger, the higher prices resulting from an industry being more monopolized would make internet access affordable by fewer people. When Ma Bell was broken up, prices on long distance came way down for the consumer. Any contention by AT&T that this merger will result in lower prices is the sort of stuff that comes out the South end of a North-facing bull.

  5. Dave says:

Another leftist liberal for Obama and his socialists policies! How much has AT&T contributed to him and the Demorats. AT&T has made hugh profits and not willing to re-invest into their infastructure.
If the feds allow this to go through I will dump T-Mobile, I will not be part of AT&T’s sorry a$$ service.
As for job creations give me a break do these people think that the American public are idiots? Merger always result in down sizing and that equates to fewer jobs.

This old man does not know what is he talking about, he needs to be a ATT customer so he can see that ATT is hateable, Im moving back to Verizon, since im on Tmobile. This old guy needs to find more about ATT previous customer comments. Old bastard!

  8. nate says:

He claims to add jobs, but what about all the tmobile employees who will lose their jobs. This whole thing is a waste of time. Its all about att eating up competition. Furthermore, att gets all kinds of backing from guys like this dude as well as several other politicians due to all the campaign dollars they recieved from att and who knows what else. No one cares about the about the american people and our well being so long as their pockets are full of cash. Now thats the truth.
