Online slander is never good for an individual or business. Steven Wyer, the founder of Reputation Advocate, knows this first hand since he saw his business and reputation destroyed after false information was spread on the Internet.
As he worked to turn his reputation around, he realized that a lot of other people and businesses have had to deal with the same issues. For this reason, he is now helping others protect their online reputation through his business and his new book called Violated Online: How Online Slander Can Destroy Your Life & What You Must Do to Protect Yourself.
He told us that people should be proactive about their reputation. He advises that they regularly monitor what is said about them online and address any issues before they get out of hand.

Great idea but he has his legal terms wrong. It is not “slander” unless it is spoken (slander is defamation by oral utterance rather than by writing, pictures, etc.)
He needs to say “Online libel-what to do about it.” Libel is
defamation by written or printed words, pictures, or in any form other than by spoken words or gestures.
We have this Libel situation with the BBB. Because we choose to not fall into the extortion cess pool, the BBB offers its accredited businesses, we have no source of rebuttal to list on the BBB and we get zero help in this matter from the BBB. They claim, some what, what I would say are criminal doings by us and there are zero charges or indictments to up hold these comments. BBB is acting as Judge and Jury. And if the comments based on unauthorized use of a credit card are true where are the authorities and why has the credit card issuer not taken these funds back from us? Could it because they too see there is no value to these claims and than said complainer goes to the next level and that is the Libel situation we seldomely face, but there are complaints and any bad reviews are far sronger than the effect of positive reviews.
Sorry. Please let me clarify, in the previous statement when I mentioned no place to list a rebuttal BBB on the bbb I meant to say file a public rebuttal on the BBB website.
seems like a silly problem to me.
If a customer owes me money and doesn’t pay is it libel to tell the facts and post it on the Internet? The key word here is facts. When people complain about movers because things were broken or lost during a move, saying so is not slander, is it?
I think this area of the law is behind the times, and it is definitely difficult for any business or person to deal with comments left online – the websites that these comments are left on are often not responsible, and it can be hard to track down anonymous posters – not to mention the fact that the damage is often done the moment that a comment is posted. Hopefully, the law changes on this soon.
