In the midst of the Occupy Wall Street movement, the timing of Chris Camillo‘s new book, Laughing at Wall Street, seems rather appropriate. Camillo spoke with WebProNews about the book, which discusses how he turned $20,000 into $2 million in a little over 3 years.

According to Camillo, the best investment advice is to “detect trends on the street better than Wall Street.” As he explained, a qualified investment is more than just doing what others say. It involves observing trends and trusting what you see.

Camillo told us that one of the best places to find these trends is on social media sites because you can observe what’s happening and what people are talking about all around the world.

In regards to the Occupy Wall Street movement, Camillo said that, by applying his advice, people have the opportunity to “beat Wall Street,” since individuals can do all the investing themselves.

Most people naturally relate advertising to monetization. However, Michael Stelzner, the Founder and CEO of Social Media Examiner, has an issue with this way of thinking. As he explained to WebProNews, it’s not that he’s against all advertising, but he believes display advertising is often taken too far.

According to Stelzner, why would someone generate content to bring people to his or her site and then serve ads that send them somewhere else? A better approach, in his opinion, is to develop a newsletter and advertise through this back channel. He told us that this approach worked to grow Social Media Examiner into a multimillion-dollar business.

Stelzner talks about his strategy in his new book, Launch, in which he also provides his formula for success: Great Content + Other People – Marketing Messages = Growth.

What do you think of this approach? Do websites put too much emphasis on display advertising, or is it the better method for becoming profitable?

When it comes to the Internet, why do all good manners seem to disappear? Most people view the Internet as a wall that they can hide behind. However, if they say the wrong thing to the wrong person, it could be very damaging to their reputation and brand.

Julie Spira, Author of upcoming book Rules of Netiquette, told WebProNews that people should apply common sense tactics to the Internet, social media, and mobile communication. So often, people act in the heat of the moment and regret it later. She believes if people practice basic Internet etiquette, AKA netiquette, both their business and personal brand will be more successful.

Spira is also known as the Cyber Dating Expert and spoke with us about this topic as well. She has been dating online way before eHarmony, Match.com, and other popular sites existed. Based on her experience, she believes that authenticity is the “new sexy.”

She told us that being authentic is better for both personal and business brands. In other words, don’t lie about age, weight, and job. She said that, since it’s all going to come out eventually, people should show that there is truth in advertising.

According to author and speaker Mari Smith, social media is transitioning into social business. She told WebProNews that it is “simply the way we must do business.” However, because marketers have utilized the space so readily, it does seem to have lost some of the “social” element.

To avoid falling into this trap, Smith recommends that marketers attempt to become fellow members in social platforms. She believes that marketers should actually befriend consumers and other brands to keep the social aspects alive.

Smith even wrote a book about this subject called The New Relationship Marketing, which is currently available.

As he tells WebProNews, social media marketing is all about engaging with with your customers, joining the conversation, and being human as a brand.

But, when you add the word “marketing” to the phrase social media… you’re talking about business. With this in mind, he said that you have to make sure that social efforts match up to business goals.

However, Falls told us that “the rules only apply if they work for you audience.” In other words, social media marketing is not about following a specific formula. Instead, it’s about utilizing social platforms and adapting them to benefit your business.

The publishing industry is changing in a major way. Although traditional publishing methods are highly regarded, they are also very costly and somewhat cumbersome.

After experiencing this personally with his book Attention! This Book Will Make You Money, Jim Kukral realized that he could do it just as easily himself. He even came up with an idea that uses crowdsourcing to pre-fund a series of books, which has raised over $20,000 up to this point.

Kukral told us that, while books and newspapers would always exist, self-publishing created opportunities for more people to get published.

Although a lot of businesses are adopting social media strategies, is this enough? According to Michael Brito, the Senior Vice President of Social Business at Edelman Digital, it’s not. He just released a book entitled Smart Business, Social Business: A Playbook for Social Media in Your Organization, which discusses the difference between a social business and a social brand.

As he explained to WebProNews, a social business starts internally and needs to come before a social brand. He said that a business should do more than just “say” they believe in social media. It needs to exhibit social behavior within the business.

If businesses create this social culture within, Brito believes that they will be able to be smarter and more effective in their overall social strategy.

Over the past few years, the publishing industry has experienced many changes. These changes are largely a result of the Internet and all the new publishers that the Web has brought into the space. On one hand, some say that online publishing killed books and newspapers. On the other hand, people argue that the Internet has actually created new opportunities for publishers.

In spite of these issues, the fact is that publishing is evolving and publishers need to know how to approach the changes. For these reasons, respected novelist and publishing executive Jeff Rivera and several others saw the importance of creating a new social community geared toward this very topic.

The Gatekeepers Post consists of a group book publishing leaders which includes agents, editors, new media influencers, authors, and more that blog about what is happening in the publishing industry. It is said to be a cross between The Huffington Post and Publisher’s Weekly but will bring current competitors together under one roof to exchange ideas.

“It’s going to certainly change everything in terms of being able to really create a conversation that will really bring ideas that work,” said Rivera.

With the continuing changes in the publishing industry, he went on to say that publishers have to redefine who they are and establish a brand for themselves. However, this means that the “little guys” can compete with the “big guys.”

The Gatekeepers Post plans to address both of these areas of publishing in order to help everyone succeed. In addition, Rivera pointed out that it hopes to redefine what a gatekeeper actually is.

The site will officially launch tonight, February 1, at midnight.

People began talking about conversion optimization back in 2006 but have increased their chatter in recent years, after realizing how powerful it is. Khalid Saleh, the President of Invesp Consulting, told WebProNews that people had to be convinced to try conversion optimization in the early days. Today, however, people are eager to learn more about it.

Unfortunately, there are several mistakes that people make with conversion optimization that Saleh addresses in this interview. For starters, he said that people often start making changes just anywhere on their site. This is a mistake because even though people may see an increase of the conversion rate in that specific area, it will not impact the site’s overall conversion rate.

A second area that people make mistakes with is best practices. Saleh said, “Best practices are good in theory but difficult in practice.” In other words, if one site makes changes that prove to be successful, it doesn’t mean that another site will be successful in those same changes.

The third mistake is what he calls “root force optimization,” which is when people make multiple changes to a site hoping that one of them will work. In order to see a true impact on the overall conversion rate, people need to have a plan and know what they are doing.

Saleh also pointed out the importance of testing. The current version of something must be tested against the new version to see if it will be effective.

“Ultimately, conversion optimization really depends on testing,” he said.

All this information and more can be found in Saleh’s book, Conversion Optimization: The Art and Science of Converting Prospects to Customers.

In this current age of digitalization, many think that people aren’t buying books. But according to Ellen Gerstein, the Director of Marketing at John Wiley & Sons, there actually are books being written that contain good content and that are selling well.

If books continue to be relevant and are delivered on the right platform, she believes they will always have a place in society. While some people have criticized traditional books with the rise of the Kindle and the iPad, Gerstein says these new platforms have done wonders for the publishing industry.

“It’s given us a new medium to reach people,” she adds.

Social media has also impacted the publishing industry in a variety of ways. For starters, publishers have become more specific in regards to the content that is included in a book, since there are so many other outlets for it.

Also, the language that people use in social media and books is very different. Books are traditionally formal, whereas, social media is a more informal environment for conversation.

In terms of advice for bloggers hoping to land a book deal, Gerstein recommends concentrating on what your message is, what community you want to connect with, and what your platform is.

“It’s the people who have the platforms who are out there creating good content and bringing quality information to a community that we’re looking for,” she says.

Businesses have encountered and adjusted to many changes in communication over time. Although social media is one of the biggest shifts in communication, businesses are having a harder time implementing it. According to Amber Naslund of Radian6, businesses have integrated the telephone, fax machine, and email, but have yet to fully embrace social media.

“We’re a little obsessed with the tools themselves instead of just the notion of what they do,” says Naslund.

Businesses also struggle with the real-time aspect of social media. They are not used to the fact that they need to raise their standards and keep up with the speed of “now.” In order for a business to be effective in real-time, Naslund believes that it starts internally. As she puts it, today, every employee has to be a marketer and every customer is a potential reporter.

Incidentally, all these topics are discussed in Naslund’s new book, The Now Revolution. It details the 7 different shifts that businesses need to make to adapt to this real-time revolution. These shifts include:

1. Culture
2. Hiring the right people
3. Organizing employees as a team
4. Listening and building listening programs
5. Emphasizing the response capability for everyone in an organization
6. Handling crisis
7. Measurement

The book will be released in February of next year, but pre-orders are available now.

Is your business adjusting to this “now revolution”?

Just as people want to get-rich-quick, they also want their business to take off quickly and be successful. Unfortunately, in the real world, success doesn’t come that easily.

WebProNews recently spoke with Gary Vaynerchuk of Wine Library TV and VaynerMedia about finding success in business. He told us, “You cannot build a real business unless you work your butt off.”

As he further explained, to build a lasting and sustainable business or brand takes years. He advises people to get heavily involved and interact with their community. In addition, he says brands need to understand the power of social media and realize that there is power in it.

Former Googler Vanessa Fox has written a book entitled Marketing in the Age of Google. The current founder of Nine By Blue spoke with WebProNews about how her book emphasizes the importance of search.

Since there are numerous paid search books, Fox wanted her book to primarily cover organic search. Although it is not a technical SEO book, it does contain high-level strategies for incorporating search into the overall business process. It includes valuable search data consisting of searcher behavior, market research, and information for building a searcher persona.

The book also looks at the integration between search and social media. Several years ago, businesses realized that they needed to have a website. Fox said they are now having similar realizations regarding their need to get involved with social. Unfortunately, search was skipped along the way. In her book, Fox gives helpful tactics for how search and social can both be easily integrated into business strategies.

Speaking about the book, Fox said: “I’m hoping that it just helps companies understand why it’s important to engage with search marketers.”

Although the book has not yet been released, you can pre-order it through Amazon.
