Surprise Announcements from Search Engines

Each conference has its share of announcements, but SMX East had a couple of surprise revelations directly from the search engines. The first announcement pertains to the canonical tag that WebProNews first told you about in February of this year.

Canonical Tag Vs. 301 Redirect

Is the canonical tag a better option than a 301 redirect? As Greg Grothaus of Google explains, the 301 redirect was the previous recommendation for duplicate page situations. However, that doesn’t mean that it is always the best option. The 301 redirect is primarily on the server side and transfers all the traffic from one page to another page permanently.

Latest Drama with Canonical Tags and Duplicate Content

We first told you about the canonical tag back in February as the three major search players announced their joint effort. The industry responded favorably since the tag would give users more control as well as reduce duplicate content. Now, nearly four months after the announcement, there seems to be a problem.
