Although the title of new film Source Code suggests a technological element, it actually takes the digital factors much further than most films. Source Code, the sci-fi thriller that premiered at SXSW, depicts the story of an American soldier that finds himself in another person’s body as part of a government program called “source code.”

In this other person’s body, Jake Gyllenhaal, who plays the lead role as Captain Colter Stevens, is responsible for discovering who planted a terrorist bomb on a Chicago commuter train. In spite of the intense action of solving the mystery, the film also contains a love story.

However, Source Code is unique in the fact that it incorporates a social game called the Source Code Mission. The game is accessible through the Microsoft Tag technology and allows users to become part of the movie experience.

In an exclusive interview with WebProNews on the night of the film’s premiere, Gyllenhaal said the game gives users a valuable opportunity to create their own story.

“This, to me, feels like, a way of creatively telling another story based on the story that was already told,” he said.

He went on to say that he believed the “coolest aspect” of social gaming is the concept of seeing fans inspired enough to create their own content that could potentially be better than the original.

Source Code opens in full release on April 1.

WebProNews had the privilege of catching up with both Matt McGowan and Mike Grehan of Incisive Media to talk about SES New York 2010. The two talked about the show and even delved into the unique highlights of it.

The show includes two training days and three action-packed days of information in between. This year it is also integrating the Affiliate Summit, Local Search Summit, and the Online Marketing Summit. Paid attendance for the show is up, which makes it the biggest SES New York in the past few years.

On the content side, Grehan says they are trying new sessions with topics surrounding real-time search, discovery, augmented reality, and more. The show also features a keynote from Microsoft’s Yusuf Mehdi who will reportedly unveil new technology.

McGowan also announces an iPhone app from ClickZ and a new platform called iReviews. He calls the platform “a directory on steroids” and explains how it allows users to rank and review products, agencies, and tools.

Because this year was the last year for SES Chicago in December, it was bittersweet for many people including Matt McGowan, VP and Publisher of Incisive Media. In 2010, SES Chicago will take place in October instead.

Because this year was the last year for SES Chicago in December, it was bittersweet for many people including Matt McGowan, VP and Publisher of Incisive Media. In 2010, SES Chicago will take place in October instead. Although the weather will likely be better in October, the city will not be lit up for the holidays.

In spite of the coming changes, just over 2,100 attendees came out this year to experience the compelling sessions ranging from analytics to futuristic topics. One session that especially stood out to McGowan was called “From Search to Discovery.” It looked at how search is evolving beyond keywords and is now more focused on behavioral patterns and content. This transition is, in part, due to the rise of social networks.

This year’s show was also special since it was the first show with Mike Grehan as VP, Global Content Director with Incisive Media. According to McGowan, his vast industry experience and perspective is already influencing the show’s agenda in a positive way.

Stay tuned to WebProNews for much more coverage from SES Chicago 2009.

According to well-known actor/director Anthony Edwards, his role as a doctor on NBC’s hit drama E.R. impacted his life much more than he initially thought. As a result, he is advocating the construction of the first public children’s hospital in Kenya, which would be the largest children’s hospital in Africa. And he is raising awareness through none other than new media outlets.

The actor told WebProNews that he avoided new media for a long time. After he became involved with the charity Shoe4Africa and saw the need to raise awareness, he realized how powerful new media could be for communication. In reference to the blogosphere and twittersphere, Edwards said:

“There’s a transparency here that, if your message is real and good, people are gonna get it.”

He views these forms of social media as valuable tools for not only his charity, but for any cause. In addition to getting the message out, new media provides a sense of urgency that other outlets do not offer. Because pediatric health has been overlooked in Africa for too long, Edwards sees the need to act now. He even began tweeting for the cause at this year’s BlogWorld Expo. The actor believes new media will raise the awareness and support his charity desperately needs.

Incidentally, Edwards will be running in the ING New York City Marathon on November 1 to raise funds for Shoe4Africa. If you would like to learn more and even contribute to this cause, visit Shoe4Africa or the organization’s Facebook Causes page.

SES always puts on a valuable show in San Jose and this year's event is no exception.

SES always puts on a valuable show in San Jose and this year’s event is no exception. The actual conferences kicks off today, but the event began yesterday with special training services from the Web Analytics Association, Direct Marketing Association, Online Marketing Institute, and Bruce Clay, Inc.

In addition to the typical conference activities, this year SES is offering a second show scheduled for today that will reveal top social media and video strategies. There will also be a Local Search Summit, which will feature Jason Calacanis of Mahalo, Atif Rafiq of Yahoo, Steve Stukenborg of Google, and Steve Espinosa of LocalSearchNews.

In the past, SES has focused primarily on the “doers” and not as much on the C-level executives. This year however, the show is dedicating an entire track to the C-suite.

As the industry has evolved, SES has evolved also to make sure its attendees obtain the most current and useful information. Matt McGowan, the VP and Publisher of Incisive Media, said that if SES didn’t evolve with the industry, it would not be capable of offering a true search event.

Stay tuned to WebProNews as we continue to bring you exclusive coverage from SES San Jose 2009.

This morning, Apple and AT&T opened its doors at 7 AM EST in the United States as they rolled out the latest release of the iPhone, the iPhone 3G S. Customers were anxious to get the device, but the crowds weren’t as large as they have been in the past since customers could pre-order the product and pick it up at their convenience.

WebProNews got the inside scoop on the new product from Larry Fox, the AT&T Director of Sales for Central and Eastern Kentucky. He shared with us several of the top features of the device including the two that are the most talked about: speed and video. The iPhone 3G S is said to be two times faster than the 3G. With the video capability, users can shoot, edit, and share their video straight from their device. Other features include:

- 3-Megapixel Camera
- Voice Control
- Compass
- Cut, Copy, and Paste
- Landscape Keyboard
- Messages
- Search
- Accessibility for the Visually and Hearing Impaired
- Internet Tethering
- Voice Memos
- Stocks
- YouTube

Interestingly enough, the iPhone 3G is gaining almost as much attention as the new release. Upon the announcement of the iPhone 3G S, Apple also reduced the price of the iPhone 3G to $99. So, you can get the 32-gigabyte iPhone 3G S for $299, the 16-gigabyte iPhone 3G S for $199 dollars, or the iPhone 3G for $99.

When we spoke with Larry this morning, he said inventory was tight, but they did have some devices still available. If you hurry out to get one of the new iPhones, feel free to get me one too!

The SEO/SEM community loves Twitter. The term “loves” in this sense is used in the strongest possible manner. Guy Kawasaki loves Twitter also, but views it strictly as a marketing tool. His strong stance in this area brought about a large response from attendees of SES New York.

Sage Lewis was among the attendees at the event and expressed some concern about Guy’s position. As he shares in this video, Sage was very excited to attend the keynote address from Guy Kawasaki and hear what he had to say. Even so, he admits that he was surprised by Guy’s message.

As mentioned above, Guy actively advocates Twitter as a marketing tool. His marketing philosophy is to obtain as many followers as possible and to measure success based on retweets.

While Sage respects Guy’s openness and the extremeness of his position, at the same time, he has mixed feelings about it. He does not like that Guy has up to 3 other people tweeting on his behalf and calls it “provocative.” Although there is no concrete measurement model for social media yet, Sage doesn’t know if Guy’s methodology is the correct solution. At this point, the measurement model has to be “home-grown” and based on individual business goals.

Sage isn’t the only one who has mixed feelings about Guy’s use of Twitter. Lisa Barone over at Outspoken Media live blogged Guy’s keynote and expressed some strong feelings toward Guy’s position on Twitter. She also received a large amount of feedback from her readers, some in her favor and others siding with Guy.

Li Evans of KeyRelevance also voiced her opinion on the issue over on SEM ClubHouse. What’s your take on the issue? Do you agree with Guy Kawasaki and his Twitter habits or do you have different feelings?

As PubCon South came to a close and we were starting to pack up our cameras, we stopped for one last interview with Brett Tabke. As the man who puts the conference all together, we wanted to see what he had to say about the event. This was the first year that the PubCon series held a conference in Austin and it had a great turnout!

According to Brett, this was the first time they targeted one particular region for a conference. Brett told us they geared this conference toward the Texas region specifically, and that people really seemed to be happy with the intimate setting.

Even though this conference was relatively low-key when compared to other PubCon events, it still carried its weight by having speakers like Guy Kawasaki and Matt Cutts. Another highlight of the show was the super session on the last day, which included Chris Brogan, Lee Odden, Reem Abeidoh, and Wayne Sutton and discussed social media and business.

PubCon South placed a strong emphasis on social media, stronger than any other conference of its kind. In response to the non-stop talk of social media, especially the big “T-word” (AKA Twitter), Brett said:

“We eat and breathe search all the time … and it was very enjoyable…”
