Yahoo is launching a new strategy that uses multiple websites and services in order to gain a stronger position in social networking. Although Yahoo has a strong collection of social web properties, their social-networking system Yahoo 360 hasn’t reached the position the company had expected. Their social web properties are the Flickr photo-sharing site, the del.icio.us social-bookmarking site, the Yahoo Answers question-and-answer search engine, and the Yahoo Groups discussion service. Executive Vice President of Yahoo’s network division Jeff Weiner discussed improvements during a keynote with conference chairman John Battelle at the Web 2.0 Expo.

“We have to pull it all together.”

This is not the first time Yahoo has had to publicly acknowledge the company’s discontentment with Yahoo 360. They also recognize their need to improve their position in a market ruled primarily by service providers such as MySpace, Facebook, and Friendster. Last year, rumors floated that Yahoo was looking to buy a social networking site, and that it talked with Facebook, but did not come to an agreement.

Reports from the Web 2.0 Expo’s sister event, Web 2.0 Summit back in November, read that Yahoo might remake Yahoo 360. According to PC World India, Weiner takes full responsibility for improving Yahoo’s position in social networking. No details have been released as to how Yahoo may use the social media sites to better rival social networking.

Yahoo has announced their latest developer platform, the Yahoo Mail web service. John Kremer, vice president for Yahoo Mail, told WebProNews he hopes to see developers leverage Yahoo Mail’s 250 million users to build innovative and interesting applications like the Flickr postcard created during their Hack Day event last September.

Yahoo Developer Network leader Chad Dickerson also disclosed an extra incentive for approved developers. Applications that drive new members to the premium service, Yahoo Mail Plus, will earn the developer ten dollars for each referral who joins. Developers building applications for Yahoo Mail Plus will have access to the full set of features available through the API.

Yahoo’s Director of Public Relations for Search Marketing Gaude Lydia Paez called WebProNews yesterday in response to an earlier video and told us, ” The complaint cited by Florian Reichling is actually false”. Yahoo was frustrated that this story got widespread notice in the media because according to them, “it has nothing whatsoever to do with Panama or the bulk upload tool at all.” Apparently Reichling’s account was turned off because of keyword spamming which Yahoo defines as the lack of quality with keywords, which are not tied to any content.

Yahoo said:
“Our reps have made every effort to make it crystal clear to this customer that the issue had nothing to do with our new system or import tool but rather due to the lack of quality with his keywords, which were not tied to any content. This is standard procedure for handling advertisers who spam our system.”

Video is becoming key to small business according to SEO expert Aaron Wall. Aaron states, “Those who are getting into video now have a head start on people who still think of the web exclusively in terms of text. Think of the current video players as the equivalent of early domainers or people who were creating legitimate domains in your field a decade ago.” Considering that this is a video, I couldn’t agree more!

Aaron’s blog post describes how businesses can use video to market your product or service. At the very least videos offer “something to link to” which can lead to more sales. He also references a post at martinibuster points out the trend from “text to video” by information sites and publishers. Quote: “Matt Cutts, WebProNews, and a few search marketers like Lee Odden and Rand Fishken have been using video much more than in the past.”

Valleywag has added more spin to rumors that Yahoo will shut off its Photos service in favor of Flickr. Ever since Brad Garlinghouse stirred up Yahoo’s executives with his ‘Peanut Butter Manifesto,’ people have wondered if Yahoo would start consolidating duplicate services. So far Flickr co-founder Stewart Butterfield has ruled out any thoughts of merging:

“I can say that I’m really, really happy about all the recent changes. Valleywag has a lot wrong (not factually wrong, but it shows up in their interpretations) so I wouldn’t put a lot of stock in it.”

So who’s spinning people in the right direction? We’ll have to “picture” that in the future, but Flickr is a lot more popular in the U.S.

Got your Yahoo Mail beta open? Look at the top of your screen, by your username. Do you see a chat button? No? Me neither, but we will soon. Ryan Kennedy on the Yahoo Mail team announced that Messenger and Mail have been merged. You can start a chat right from the mailbox. They’re taking their time rolling this out to the millions of people who use Yahoo Mail beta.

Jason Calacanis plans to embrace S-E-O. This might be a surprise to you considering his latest rant about S-E-O, where he called ninety percent of the industry a bunch of “snake oil salesmen.” But a challenge from Neil Patel at Pronet Advertising may make Jason rethink his stance. Neil said he can take Jason’s blog, increase his daily search traffic, and do so without being shady or unethical. Jason accepted and that’s quite a turnaround from the man who said, “Don’t smoke the S-E-O crack.”

Jason found his rant against S-E-O dismantled when a name everyone in the search industry knows took him on. Danny Sullivan posted a long response to Jason’s rant, and gave us some of the juiciest quotes outside of a Paris Hilton – Lindsay Lohan catfight, like this one:

“…you and other thought-leaders are often too ignorant and too lazy to fully understand something you want to attack. Rather than educate, you toss out linkbaiting, flame-producing lines that do nothing to solve the problems you perceive.”

Jason responded to this by backing off a little from his rant and saying he’s just talking about fringe SEO players, not the majority of good ones that attend Danny’s conferences. Gee Jason, thanks for clarifying that now.

It looks like eBay and PayPal are more than a little scared of Google and its Checkout service. Google has been offering a ten-dollar bonus to people who sign up for Checkout. PayPal doesn’t want to be left behind, so they’re dangling a fifteen-dollar rebate in front of people. Jason Calacanis, yes, we’re still talking about him, called the promotion a “dog fight for customers.”

Mobile E-S-P-N is coming back, even though just about nobody wanted it the first time. But this time they promise they have everything figured out. Verizon will help E-S-P-N come back to people’s pockets as part of their V Cast service. Only about thirty thousand people picked up MobileE-S-P-N when it was available as a stand-alone service. Engadget’s Thomas Ricker quipped that:

“MobileESPN is back from the dead sheriff…This must be what the execs at Verizon had in mind when they passed on the iPhone. Braaaaains, give us your brains!”

The success of Google has inspired a lot of new search engine startups. An article at OEDb created a list of their “Top 25 Web 2.0 Search Engines”. Many of the new search engines mash together other online services using programming tools like Ajax.

A good example of this is FlickrStorm, which gives the searcher a new … more interesting way to search for Flickr images.

Will one of these search engines become the next billion-dollar internet darling?

Speaking of new search engines, PowerSet will announce today according to VentureBeat that “they have won exclusive rights to significant search technology that may propel it past Google”.

The technology developed at the Palo Alto Research Center in Silicon Valley will enable PowerSet to better interpret natural language … which has long been considered the holy grail for search engines.

With this technology, instead of tossing out common words such as “the”, “in” and “of” like Google … PowerSet will utilize those words to understand searches and content which it then believes will provide much better search results.

Will Google become the next AltaVista? … probably not… but if the short history of the internet means anything … Google will eventually be challenged by a search engine with better search technology… Will PowerSet be the one?

It’s February, and everyone knows what’s coming up next week. I’m sure you’ve been thinking about it too, but if you haven’t, it isn’t too late to get ready for the big day. And it’s not just the men out there I’m talking too, because I’m sure a lot of ladies need to be reminded.

Tuesday the Thirteenth is Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday, and in their advance announcement, Chris Budd of their Security Response Center said there will be updates for Windows and Office, along with other fixes. So mark your calendars. Oh, and Wednesday is Valentine’s Day, you might want to mark that down too.

Are you a two-timing jerk? If so, Google can help. According to a poll conducted by Google and Harris Interactive, over half of US adults buy gifts for more than one Valentine – though most say the other one is their mother or their dog.

Sure it is, fellas. You better hope your lady can’t hack your email and find your order confirmations.

Also, 43 percent of survey respondents planned to buy more than one Valentine’s Day gift for that special someone or someones in their life, probably to try and make up for being a double-dipping a-hole.

So to help out with that made-for-marketing holiday, Google is offering Checkout users $10 off purchases of $10 or more through February 15th – you know for all the day-too-late cheapskates out there.
