Search engine marketing is very broad, and includes many different issues. At the SES conference in New York, Webpronews caught up with Jill Whalen, the CEO and founder of High Rankings, and talked with her about a few of these issues. One of the issues concerning SEO is duplicate content. As Whalen explains, many people confuse the penalty and filtering of duplicate content. When a search has two pieces of content including the same information, but different URL’s, most likely, only one will show up in the search engine. As a result, many times webmasters assume this means their site has been penalized or banned; however, it really means that Google, or the search engine used, doesn’t want to relay the same information twice. Whalen offers a word of advice in order to avoid duplicate content.

“Make one URL for each piece of content or exclude the other using robots.txt.”

If the content of a search doesn’t show up, many times it can be found in the supplemental results tag. Whalen touches upon a few matters that she posted on her site dealing with common misconceptions such as scripts from external files, altering the templates of each page of your website, and not commenting in code.

Whalen concludes by discussing the High Rankings Seminars that are held two or three times each year. The seminars include five or six speakers that offer basic information that is easy to implement.

Should a domain name or website name be changed after it has already been in existence for a while? Some say yes, and some say no.

Should a domain name or website name be changed after it has already been in existence for a while? Some say yes, and some say no. This is just one of the many helpful topics that is being covered at the Search Engine Strategies Conference in New York this week. In our live coverage of the SES conference we caught up with Search Engine Optimization Expert Jill Whalen who suggests you should not change your domain name or website name unless you have to.

“With Google’s aging delays, sometimes even if you put the same website up on a new domain, you’ll lose rankings immediately.”

If you do decide to change your domain name or website name, you may face a few challenges. Cost is just one issue that may complicate matters. Another issue that may arise is the confusion involved in trying to decide if you should change. Most likely the biggest issue is… if you do decide to change, there is no guarantee it will be better than the old one. Jill Whalen offered this advice if you do change:

“At least use a 301 redirect, permanent redirect, but sometimes that doesn’t work either. You still get the aging delay thing with Google, but some people in my firm have found that you can use a 302 redirect.”

That’s all for this news update. We will continue to bring you many more helpful tips from the SES Conference in New York.
