Today, popular online video service Twitvid released an open social video network as well as a newly designed website. Through these changes, the user experience becomes much more personalized. In addition, this release allows for more discovering, sharing, and discussing of video content.

Mo Al Adham, the company’s CEO and Founder, calls the changes a “natural progression” of the current service. Now, not only can users share raw video, but they can also share videos from other services, such as YouTube.

The social network aspect gives users the ability to obtain followers on their Twitvid profile. Adham told us that this element encourages better engagement and sharing.

“When you watch videos on Twitvid, we want you to watch videos with other people,” he said. “We want you to feel like there’s a community around you with video.”

He went on to say that Twitvid plans to expand to more platforms going forward.

WebProNews recently had the privilege of talking with Matt Mullenweg, the founding developer of WordPress. The blogging platform rolled out its latest version, WordPress 3.2, on July 4th and hopes to bring a faster and lighter approach to the service.

Mullenweg explained to us how 3.2 meets this goal in everything from the core to the design of it. He is especially fond of the “distraction-free writing” feature that allows users to see only their text.

He also addressed some recent security concerns and competition with Google and Tumblr.

What are your thoughts on WordPress 3.2?

PayPal made some cloud computing advancements at Google I/O by announcing its X Toolkit for Google App Engine (GAE). WebProNews spoke with PayPal’s Evangelist Rasesh Shah, who explains how the toolkit makes it easier for Google App Engine developers to take PayPal APIs and further develop on top of them.

Developers can simply download the toolkit and take advantage of all the APIs available. In addition, this platform allows developers create and run Web applications and services on Google’s cloud. Since it is on Google’s cloud, developers do not need any other hosting.

According to PayPal, the platform will enable many new payments in various marketplaces. The company is encouraging developers to utilize this platform to continue innovation.

“We want to make it as open as possible… so now, you don’t have to think about payment as a problem,” says Shah.

In the fight for an open Web, there are many challenges. One of the big challenges that is not often heard involves licensing technologies. As Open Web Advocate Chris Messina explains, to allow websites to communicate with one another in the same language and in a consistent way, open Web developers need to be able to access other people’s patents without getting sued.

Messina works with the Open Web Foundation, which is in support of this idea. The challenge is getting both large and small companies on board with this concept. He goes on to say that it takes a lot of work in order to produce something that will eventually be free for everyone.

In regards to the status of the open Web platform, Messina says that we are in the very early stages. As people publish and syndicate more content, more applications will be built, but the need to “mitigate the noise” will increase even more. In addition, information overload will result with this influx of more content. However, Messina believes that the solution for information overload is more data, in terms of metadata to help computers and machines understand it.

Another element that is often heard in regards to open Web efforts is activity streams. This term is being heard more and more around the Web, especially as the social Web continues to grow. According to Messina, these streams and feeds have been around since 1999, but have really exploded with the rise of social media.

Interestingly enough, the formats that drive these Web applications have not really changed since 1999. Messina says the concept of activity streams is about taking the existing feed infrastructure and using it to power the social Web.

In the end, the bad news about open Web efforts is that there is still a long way to go. On the flip side, the good news is that there is a lot of work being done in the right direction.

Googlers Sundar Pichai and Linus Upson announced on Wednesday that the company was embarking on a new project: the Google Chrome Operating System. After the Web browser launched last year, many people anticipated a Google OS as the company's next move.

Googlers Sundar Pichai and Linus Upson announced on Wednesday that the company was embarking on a new project: the Google Chrome Operating System. After the Web browser launched last year, many people anticipated a Google OS as the company’s next move.

Google Chrome OS is open source and will initially be intended for netbooks; however, the system is said to be equipped to power large desktop systems as well. The three main aspects of the operating system are speed, simplicity, and security. Although Google will construct its own windowing system, the new OS will run on top of the kernel from the open source Linux OS.

According to the Google blog post making the announcement, the OS will not be available to consumers until the second half of 2010.

As Google prepares to enter the operating system market, many questions come to mind. First of all, is this a direct attack against Microsoft since Bing appears to be making legitimate progress? Will Google’s OS exist as a serious contender to the alternative operating systems? How will consumers and computer manufacturers react? Will Google be hit with more antitrust investigations?

Although there are many unanswered questions associated with this news, one thing that is certain is that Google has just taken on a challenging mission.
