As the BlogWorld Expo came to a close in Los Angeles, Rick Calvert, the show’s CEO and Co-founder, sat down with WebProNews to talk about the event. According to Calvert, it was the biggest show ever for BWE. He believes that the growth of the show indicates that the industry is growing as well.

At the very first BlogWorld, back in 2007, the audience consisted primarily of bloggers. There were only a few podcasters and only 1 or 2 video news outlets present, (WPN was there!) and Twitter was in its very early days. Today, the show has evolved to include WordPress, Blogger, and Posterous, and has sponsors such as Ford, Southwest Airlines, and Century 21.

Calvert told us that the show would continue to evolve as the industry does.

The next BlogWorld Expo will take place in New York June 5-7.

For 5 years, WebProNews has partnered with BlogWorld and New Media Expo, the world’s first and largest new media conference, in an effort to broadcast how new media can grow your business, brand, and audience. Stay tuned to WebProNews for much more exclusive coverage.

Lou Mongello had a successful career in the law profession but gave it up to become a podcaster. Why? As he explained to WebProNews, he wanted to follow his passion, which is Walt Disney World. His podcast, WDW Radio, was really the natural step after he published a book and began a website on the park.

“It’s a much more powerful medium than anything you could write,” he said in regards to podcasting.

Mongello admitted that it wasn’t easy to monetize his podcast but said his passion provided the motivation he needed to make it work. He has been able to monetize through his audience, through sponsors, and through himself as a brand.

As she explained to WebProNews, five years ago, she had no idea what a podcast was but decided to jump in and learn the space. She did just that and is now training people to do the same.

According to her, one of the “secret sauces” is merely showing up. She told us that so many people are non-committal to their blog and podcast, which really hurts. She believes that, if people show effort and consistency, they are on the right track to success.

A few years ago, a phenomenon hit the Internet called Ask A Ninja. It quickly became viral. At BlogWorld, WebProNews spoke with Kent Nichols, co-creator of the initiative, about how Ask A Ninja began and how they keep it alive.

According to Nichols, Ask A Ninja began as an animation project that he and Doug Sarine came up with. Finally, they decided to shoot a video of the ninja and the rest is history.

Anytime something quickly becomes a hit, especially online, the question of sustainability comes into play. So many times there are concepts that are hot temporarily but not long-term.

“To sustain anything on the Internet is just consistency,” said Nichols.

He goes on to say that by creating content on a regular basis, people will find it and the idea will then grow. Although viral content is great, he warns people not to count on it, since it is rare.

As far as advice goes, Nichols recommends making content for yourself, first and foremost, making it good, and then always trying to make it better. Incidentally, this is advice that the Ask A Ninja guys apply to their own efforts. For example, Ask A Ninja recently re-launched its web series as a daily show with new videos Monday-Friday.

Even though they have a book and an actual store full of products, they are constantly aspiring for more. Nichols said they would like to produce up to 1 hour of content each week, and that they would also like to find more ways to take their online community and translate it into other channels.

For more on the ninja, check out their site.

Can you believe it? Adam Carolla actually comes from a long line of successful podcasters dating all the way back to his great-grandfather. Although it makes for a humorous story, this isn’t exactly how Carolla rose to podcasting fame.

Truth be told, he began his podcast after he got axed from his CBS Radio show. In this interview from BlogWorld, he tells WebProNews that he didn’t even know what a podcast was until that time.

Although podcasting is a relatively new medium, it didn’t take long for Carolla to make a splash in the podcasting world. During the second week of his podcast, 2.4 million downloads were reported. His podcast was also name the #1 audio podcast by iTunes in 2009.

“I’m flattered that people think of me as some kind of podcast pioneer,” says Carolla.

He also points out, “If people like to give me more credit than I deserve, I’m always willing to take it.”

While the founder of ACE Broadcasting does not believe that traditional and new media are entirely different, he does say that new media platforms have many challenges. Most of these challenges are due to the fact that podcasting is still new and monetizing anything “new” is always difficult.

Fortunately, he has seen improvements among advertisers over the last six months.

Carolla is currently performing at multiple Improv clubs across the U.S. He also has a book due to come out November 2, entitled, In Fifty Years We’ll All Be Chicks.

For the latest on Carolla, visit his site.

Radio is proof that audio is a powerful medium and podcasting has brought that medium to great new levels. Podcasting delivers a message without interruptions and noise. Due to the convenience of podcasts, businesses can use them to develop their brand and build brand loyalty with their customers. In this video, Amanda Watlington of Searching for Profit speaks out about podcasts, the importance of optimizing them, and current trends with them.

First of all, who should podcast? Anyone can, but that doesn’t mean everyone should. The primary groups of podcasters that dominate the directories are independent musicians and artists and technologists discussing the latest gadgets. Most recently the directories have been dominated by podcasts dealing with spirituality and prayer.

In deciding whether to podcast or not, you need to ask yourself if the user will consider your content to be worthwhile and intriguing. Also, make sure you have enough supporting content that will produce an enduring audience. If your idea does not meet these standards, then you should probably reconsider the idea of a podcast.

If you do meet the criteria and are ready to move forward, you definitely need to optimize your podcast. Amanda says that optimizing a podcast is actually quite simple and only contains 3 major elements:

1. Optimize audio file
2. Optimize landing page
3. Optimize RSS feed

After that’s been done, distribute your podcast. It is not a hard process, but it does take time and dedication.
