Popular forum Topix and Equation Research recently conducted a study to learn more about the relationship between the Internet and politics. The companies surveyed 1,000 U.S. voters and found that people are increasingly turning to the Web for their political information.

WebProNews spoke with Chris Tolles, the CEO of Topix, who told us that voters are trending online because they get a more balanced view. The study also found that voters are going online in order to participate in political discussions and debates.

Tolles told us that this trend would increase in the coming years as voters strive to have a “personal relationship” with news. He also said that politicians would have to learn how to leverage online platforms such as Topix, Facebook, and Twitter, to ensure that they are connecting with the conversation.

After the AT&T/T-Mobile merger fell threw last month, a lot of questions have been raised about what happens next with both companies. Will AT&T still be able to fulfill its goals? Can T-Mobile USA survive since its parent company, Deutsche Telekom, does not want to invest in it further?

WebProNews spoke with former Congressman and Internet Innovation Alliance Honorary Chairman Rick Boucher about these questions and others, who gave us his perspective on the companies. Congressman Boucher supported the merger, as he told us in a prior interview, because he believed it would bring innovation, help the economy, and produce jobs.

He told us that, although AT&T would not be able to complete its goals in the same time frame it would have if the deal had gone through, he believed it could still meet them. The Congressman also said T-Mobile was a strong company, and he believed it would remain a player in the mobile industry. However, its biggest challenge will be gaining the capital it needs to deploy 4G.

Even though he thinks the companies will bounce back from this hurdle, Congressman Boucher told us that the mobile industry, consumers, and the economy would be impacted long-term.

What’s your prediction for the future of AT&T and T-Mobile? Let us know in the comments.

Since cartoons and satire go hand in hand with politics, GoAnimate decided to make it easy for anyone to make their own political animated video for free. The company recently released new features that include a collection of political characters and backgrounds focused around the U.S. Presidential election. The characters specifically include all the current Republican candidates, President Barack Obama, Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner, as well as other political media personalities.

WebProNews spoke with Gary Lipkowitz, the company’s VP of Corporate Development, who told us that GoAnimate wanted to give everyone a voice during this political season. As he explained, users can create a video in a matter of minutes and share it with all their friends in hopes of spreading their influence.

When the FCC recently released its “Future of Media” report, it received a mixed response. The right wing applauded the commission, while the left wing believed it fell short on several issues.

In all honesty, the report did not make many recommendations, which Adam Thierer, a senior research fellow with the Technology Policy Project at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, considers a positive move. It’s no secret that new media has brought a fair share of challenges to the table, but Thierer told us that he doesn’t think the government stepping in would provide any solution. He believes that the market will work itself out.

Where do you see media going in the future?

It’s hard to believe this election season is finally drawing to a close. For some, Election Day will be the end of the road; for others, it will be just the beginning.

This election period has made history in several different areas. We’re not going to rehash all of them since media outlets have already outdone themselves covering that aspect of the election. However, the impact of the Internet and technology in this election is something worth discussing.

Ron Paul’s enormous presence online will never be forgotten. Nor will Barack Obama’s move of alerting his supporters of his running mate via text message and email. And the very day John McCain announced that he was putting together a committee and considering running for President, the Senator had search ads running.

There is no doubt that the Presidential campaigns set the precedent for all other campaigns. Mindy Finn, the former Director of e-Strategy for Mitt Romney 2008 and who currently blogs for TheNextRight.com, takes this observation a step further and says the Presidential campaigns are expected to set a high standard for others to follow. The Presidential campaigns have large staffs of experienced members working to incorporate the latest and most effective tactics.

It will be interesting to see how future campaigns are conducted. Whatever the outcome may be at the polls, this election period has shown us that people are grasping the power of the Internet and social media and are finally allowing them to become mainstream.
