Although it may be hard for some to believe, Yahoo was actually a big threat for Google, Microsoft, and other Internet companies not too many years ago. In addition to Yahoo Search, many of the company’s properties were looked to for inspiration.

However, as Sage Lewis of SageRock Digital Marketing Agency explained to WebProNews, this “doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.” According to him, successful Internet companies take risks, innovate, and are passionate about what they do.

Yahoo, on the other hand, has undergone a search deal with Microsoft, numerous management changes, layoffs, and has also closed many properties in recent years. Lewis believes that this series of events, among others, led to Yahoo no longer being a “courageous, frontier-leading company.”

The SEO/SEM community loves Twitter. The term “loves” in this sense is used in the strongest possible manner. Guy Kawasaki loves Twitter also, but views it strictly as a marketing tool. His strong stance in this area brought about a large response from attendees of SES New York.

Sage Lewis was among the attendees at the event and expressed some concern about Guy’s position. As he shares in this video, Sage was very excited to attend the keynote address from Guy Kawasaki and hear what he had to say. Even so, he admits that he was surprised by Guy’s message.

As mentioned above, Guy actively advocates Twitter as a marketing tool. His marketing philosophy is to obtain as many followers as possible and to measure success based on retweets.

While Sage respects Guy’s openness and the extremeness of his position, at the same time, he has mixed feelings about it. He does not like that Guy has up to 3 other people tweeting on his behalf and calls it “provocative.” Although there is no concrete measurement model for social media yet, Sage doesn’t know if Guy’s methodology is the correct solution. At this point, the measurement model has to be “home-grown” and based on individual business goals.

Sage isn’t the only one who has mixed feelings about Guy’s use of Twitter. Lisa Barone over at Outspoken Media live blogged Guy’s keynote and expressed some strong feelings toward Guy’s position on Twitter. She also received a large amount of feedback from her readers, some in her favor and others siding with Guy.

Li Evans of KeyRelevance also voiced her opinion on the issue over on SEM ClubHouse. What’s your take on the issue? Do you agree with Guy Kawasaki and his Twitter habits or do you have different feelings?

“Maps: They’re Not Just for Driving Anymore” was the title of one of the sessions at SES Chicago. It is interesting to see how maps truly have evolved and are not just for driving or for directions or for learning geography. They now have a much deeper meaning as Sage Lewis of SageRock explains in this video.

Did you honestly think that maps could ever be used in your marketing efforts? They definitely can. Sage says businesses have huge opportunities with maps if they would just use them. Businesses can use Local Business Listings through the search engines and when a user searches for local information, he or she will find your business.

The more information you can provide in your listing the better. Sage recommends including pictures, videos, and Web references since all these factors will build a bigger Web presence for your business.

Both small and large businesses should utilize this tool. It’s free and easy to use. Think about the opportunities when visitors come to town and search for restaurants, hotels, movie cinemas, doctors, and the list goes on and on. All these visitors could turn out to be your paying customers by you simply implementing this tool.

As Sage says, take advantage of these opportunities and make more money!

Before the rise of social media, marketers seemed to believe the more user traffic the better.
