Qik, the mobile video company that Skype recently acquired, just launched a new iPhone app at SXSW. Bhaskar Roy, the co-founder and SVP of Qik Products for Skype, spoke to WebProNews and pointed out how the app makes it easy to connect with people from almost anywhere.

“It enables various ways for friends and family to connect,” he said.

The app allows users to place live video calls with two-way chat. In addition, the app has a social element since it lets users instantly capture videos and share them on sites such as Facebook. It also includes a live feed so that users can see what videos their friends have been posting.

Another aspect of Qik is that it leverages cloud computing for storage and processing. Video support for mobile devices has long been a challenge since video tends to drain batteries. To overcome this challenge, Qik puts the hard processing on servers, which allows the cloud to become a “lifeline” that prevents battery issues.

According to Roy, Qik’s goal has always been to enable video interactivity through mobile devices. Qik believes it has achieved this goal in its mobile video solution.

While the paid version of the app is currently available in the App Store, the free version is still pending.

Photos and Facebook play a significant role in a lot of people’s lives. Every day, or at least once a week, many folks browse, seek out, or upload pics on Facebook or some other site. Related trends may be worth knowing about, then, and two cofounders of Pixable were recently good enough to share some facts.

In an interview with Abby Johnson, Pixable’s Inaki Berenguer and Andres Blank discussed a study that discovered certain patterns. Women share twice as many photos on Facebook as men, for example, and also appear in twice as many photos.

Then here’s a different, and perhaps less intuitive, fact: according to Berenguer and Blank, older people share almost as many photos as younger people.

Finally – and we’re perhaps back into more obvious territory here – guys like to look at photos of girls they don’t know, while girls like to look at photos of girls they do know.

Anyway, as people continue to use Facebook more and more, and picture-taking mobile devices become better and more common (whether we’re talking about smartphones, iPads, or whatever), the cofounders of Pixable predicted that photo overload could become an issue.

Indeed, the pair believe that finding a way of organizing pictures will be key, or else people will become overwhelmed by pictures of friends, favorite celebrities, and popular bands.

Skype recently released information about the failure of the network from August 16th in a blog called the Heartbeat. The site says they are in no way blaming Microsoft for the outage and take full responsibility. After reporting the outage of Skype and talking to a few people in the web world, WebProNews got the chance to talk with ZDnet.com blogger Russell Shaw. He described his take on the entire situation.

Skype crashed due to an overload of reboots after a Windows Update.

After experiencing an outage last week, Skype reps finally released information on the cause for the black out. According to the Heartbeat Blog, Skype crashed due to an overload of reboots after a Windows Update. It just happened that too many computers were trying to log on at one time, causing the network to crash. WebProNews talked to Phil Wolff, managing editor of Skype Journal and Rob Malda from Slashdot.org about the situation.

The online telephone service, Skype experienced difficultites in the network. Skype users started noticing problems on Thursday, especially in the first stages of logging in. Skype told users the problem would be fixed in 12 to 24 hours, yet the time passed and the problem still existed. Now Skype released a statement saying they were on the road to recovery and working on stabilizing.
