A new online distribution network for high-quality TV and video content called Jalipo launched yesterday.

A new online distribution network for high-quality TV and video content called Jalipo launched yesterday. With partners including BBC World and Al Jazeera English, Jalipo also has the former president of Sony Europe, Chris Deering, on board as its chairman.

It will offer a pay-as-you-go credit service to consumers wanting to watch live events and video-on-demand online. They are doing this to allow content owners more control over their footage to set the price and determine where it is available to avoid chancing any other distribution deals. Viewers will pay a per-minute rate. Chief Executive Alex Taylor talked about the plans for Jalipo.

“We’re hoping to create a much more user-friendly way to buy video content that means you can now monetize your content online while still maintaining your rights.”

Video and user-generated content has proved to be incredibly popular on the Internet. Google Inc. bought YouYube last year, but just last month Viacom Inc. sued them for more than $1 billion after what was said to be intentional copyright infringement for allowing users to upload popular shows onto the site. Although YouTube dominates the market, they may have competition on their hands since Jalipo aspires to be an alternative to YouTube. Taylor hinted at this idea in a comment.

“This is absolutely not for user-generated content. If you were looking to put us into the marketplace, I would put us at the other end of the market to YouTube. This is rights-protected, territory-restricted and monetized every minute.”

Jalipo wants to allow more content to be made available to consumers and also let it be syndicated to other sites. They have signed content deals with BBC World; Al Jazeera English; news channel France 24 in French, English and Arabic; and Bloomberg, among others. It is looking to sign deals to show live sports, concerts, and independent films. Jalipo also just announced that they joined the Adobe Solutions Partner Programme.

Viacom announced yesterday that it would use Yahoo to provide search advertising for 33 of its Internet sites. The decision brings a boost to Yahoo’s new Web advertising system, Project Panama. The system is being viewed as a major test in Yahoo providing a competitive advantage to Web search leader Google.

According to Reuters, the partnership between Yahoo and Viacom covers broadband sites for its MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, and Nickelodeon television networks, and it could possibly even expand to more than 140 additional sites worldwide. Viacom Chief Executive Philippe Dauman commented on the issue,

“Yahoo has made impressive strides with its new search marketing system.”

The Yahoo/Viacom team does pose competition for Google who reveals their power in traditional forms of media such as television, radio, and publishing. Analysts’ reports show this is a renewed force for Yahoo after a year filled with many defeats. UBS analyst Ben Schacter stated,

“It’s a positive for Yahoo. They’re getting a good quality partner and inventory, which they need in their network.”

A report by Vidmeter.com contradicts the idea that YouTube became a billion dollar property only because of copyright infringing videos posted there by its users. Vidmeter’s three-month study found only about nine percent of the most-viewed videos on YouTube were removed at the request of copyright holders. Those removed clips, most of which were music videos, picked up less than six percent of all views for the period.

Out of Vidmeter’s sample, 72 of the videos were removed at the request of Viacom, which has sued Google over YouTube’s failure to keep copyrighted works off the site. Internet business blogger Henry Blodget suggested “Google/YouTube had a lot more leverage in the YouTube-Big Media negotiations than was commonly thought,” since so little copyrighted content was found consistently by Vidmeter in YouTube’s most viewed videos.

The Viacom lawsuit against Google over YouTube has started playing out in the court of public opinion. Just a few days after Viacom attorney Michael Fricklas gave Viacom’s side of the story in an op-ed letter to The Washington Post, Google lawyer Michael Kwun responded with the search engine’s opinion of Viacom’s action.

Kwun commented on Viacom and its role under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Viacom has accused YouTube and Google of massive copyright infringement. Kwun said, “Viacom’s lawyers helped craft this law but apparently don’t like it, after all. They want to shirk the responsibility Congress gave them.” Under the DMCA, Viacom is required to notify YouTube to request removal of infringing content. Google thinks Viacom is trying to rewrite copyright law with their legal action.

Their notice of inquiry should begin another round of debate on ‘net neutrality’, and whether big providers like AT&T or Comcast can charge additional fees to businesses for a higher level of service. The FCC has been considering whether or not the industry needs more regulation to protect consumers.

Ask.com product manager Ryan Massie thinks his company has the formula for success when it comes to the local search market. Massie told attendees at the Kelsey Group’s ‘Drilling Down on Local’ conference, “When someone comes to that search box and we give them exactly what we want–the right result, the right content, take them to the right page–they’re going to come back.

Podcasting made a very slight gain in listenership according to Edison Media Research. Arbitron research found that 13 percent of the twelve and up population listen to audio podcasts in 2007, where only eleven percent listened in 2006. More people have heard of podcasts, but Edison’s Tom Webster said many people mistakenly think they need an iPod or MP3 player to listen to them.

Viacom demanded that YouTube remove a Stephen Colbert parody video created by MoveOn.org, and that has led to a free speech court battle. The Electronic Frontier Foundation has asked a federal court to dismiss copyright infringement claims brought by Viacom against MoveOn and the makers of the video, which includes clips of Colbert in its parody of his show and MoveOn’s activism.

Rocketboom fans may have to pay to see Joanne Colan, now that show co-creator Andrew Baron has told Marketwatch that advertising isn’t working out as he would like. No decision has been made, but Baron said advertisers “are just not happy to do small deals” like Rocketboom has been doing. Baron also noted that the site earns secondary income for consulting work and conference appearances.

When Google holds its upcoming election for members of its board, Michael Moritz won’t be on the list of candidates. Google announced that Moritz, a member of Google’s board since 1999 and a driving force at Sequoia Capital, has chosen to spend more time tending to the growing demands of Sequoia’s business. “Mike’s many contributions to Google over the years as investor and director helped us immensely,” Google CEO Eric Schmidt said in a statement about the news.

Google announced a change to its privacy practices for logging user information. They plan to anonymize their server logs after a limited period of time. After implementing this change within a year’s time, user data will be made much more anonymous after eighteen to twenty-four months from collection. However, lawmakers in the U.S. or Europe could require Google to keep original data for longer period of time.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has managed to convince Michael Crook to stop filing bogus DMCA claims against websites carrying a picture of him that appeared on Fox News. A settlement of the EFF lawsuit requires him to withdraw his complaints, take a copyright law course, and apologize for interfering with the free speech rights of those he targeted.

Wired News will put the phrase, “We are the media,” to the test as it launches its Assignment Zero project. The project will run for two to three months, and offers any willing contributor a chance at being a reporter or editor. Results of the project will be published at NewAssignment.net and Wired. If it works, it would show that a widely separated group of people can report completely and well on news issues.

The next generation of search will be improved for people as it becomes more personalized. Google’s Matt Cutts told Read/Write Web that “personalization has a very high chance of being able to improve search for the average user.” Matt also talked about web spam, and said being able to offer spam free search in any language has been a big trend for Google both last year and this year.

Dell may be listening to its customers who want the Linux operating system as a pre-installed option. Thousands of visitors to Dell’s IdeaStorm website asked for that choice, and Dell has followed up by posting a survey that asks how people would want to have Linux delivered on its hardware.

Long-time YouTube critic Mark Cuban weighed in with an opinion on Viacom’s billion-dollar lawsuit against the video sharing site and its owner, Google. Cuban said in a post at his Blog Maverick site that he hopes the lawsuit is not just a negotiating ploy. He sees no downside for Viacom and expects many more suits to follow Viacom’s action.

Google may be softening its stance on net neutrality. GigaOM writer Drew Clark cited recent comments made by Google senior policy counsel
Andrew McLaughlin that ran counter to Google’s publicly stated opposition to quality of service agreements. Although Google distanced themselves from McLaughlin’s comments by calling them his “personal view,” Google did sign an exclusive contract with Verizon to carry YouTube videos in November 2006.

Rumors of a MySpace News site have gained more credibility. Screenshots of the news portal at the social networking site were leaked to Wired News in the form of a sales document. The leaked data discussed how the site will be structured, but a launch date was not included. Previous rumors stated the launch would happen sometime in the second quarter of 2007.

Google has continued working with TV networks to get their content on YouTube. Google appears to not get along with CBS, Viacom, or NBC. PaidContent’s Rafat Ali explains the dilemma between Google and CBS.

The deal incorporated CBS shows on YouTube, sharing advertising income and Google would sell inventory from CBS radio.

Google would have guaranteed advertising revenue of more than 500 million dollars for CBS. Google sought after a five-year contract, while CBS found the deal un-workable.

Recently Viacom demanded YouTube remove 100-thousand copyrighted videos. Last year Google CEO Eric Schmidt put the idea forward that they may guarantee up to 500 million dollars in advertising revenue over several years to license Viacom’s videos. Google wanted to pay Viacom around 70 percent of advertising revenue, but Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman wanted more control of advertising and technical issues before negotiating the money. Viacom took Comedy Central away, and arranged a deal with Internet television service Joost.

NBC television executives have become furious from illegal postings of TV shows on YouTube. Ali cited a six-page letter from N-B-C to Google insisting Google keeps unauthorized content off of YouTube.

Google can’t seem to come across allies in the television business.

Myspace announced an affiliation with Audible Magic to acknowledge and examine uploaded videos for copyrighted content. Myspace already authorizes audio fingerprinting technology from Audible. The new video fingerprinting makes Myspace the largest video site to present copyright owners that defense. This Myspace move came after Viacom demanded YouTube remove more than 100-thousand videos. Myspace CEO and co-founder Chris DeWolfe wants to shelter Myspace users.

“MySpace is dedicated to ensuring that content owners, whether large or small, can both promote and protect their content in our community. For MySpace, video filtering is about protecting artists and the work they create.”
Myspace has also created a content takedown tool to make it more accessible and practical for copyright owners to ask for removal of any unauthorized content.

Audible Magic CEO Vance Ikezoye says that any site offering protection will have a better chance of succeeding in the online video world.
“With the explosive growth and popularity of MySpace, the recognition and filtering of copyrights will play an important role in its ongoing success.”

Myspace flies forward in front of YouTube to find and prevent copyright-protected videos. Google CEO Eric Schmidt stated in a conference call that YouTube would make changes soon, but gave no deadline.
