As the BlogWorld Expo came to a close in Los Angeles, Rick Calvert, the show’s CEO and Co-founder, sat down with WebProNews to talk about the event. According to Calvert, it was the biggest show ever for BWE. He believes that the growth of the show indicates that the industry is growing as well.

At the very first BlogWorld, back in 2007, the audience consisted primarily of bloggers. There were only a few podcasters and only 1 or 2 video news outlets present, (WPN was there!) and Twitter was in its very early days. Today, the show has evolved to include WordPress, Blogger, and Posterous, and has sponsors such as Ford, Southwest Airlines, and Century 21.

Calvert told us that the show would continue to evolve as the industry does.

The next BlogWorld Expo will take place in New York June 5-7.

For 5 years, WebProNews has partnered with BlogWorld and New Media Expo, the world’s first and largest new media conference, in an effort to broadcast how new media can grow your business, brand, and audience. Stay tuned to WebProNews for much more exclusive coverage.

Qik, the mobile video company that Skype recently acquired, just launched a new iPhone app at SXSW. Bhaskar Roy, the co-founder and SVP of Qik Products for Skype, spoke to WebProNews and pointed out how the app makes it easy to connect with people from almost anywhere.

“It enables various ways for friends and family to connect,” he said.

The app allows users to place live video calls with two-way chat. In addition, the app has a social element since it lets users instantly capture videos and share them on sites such as Facebook. It also includes a live feed so that users can see what videos their friends have been posting.

Another aspect of Qik is that it leverages cloud computing for storage and processing. Video support for mobile devices has long been a challenge since video tends to drain batteries. To overcome this challenge, Qik puts the hard processing on servers, which allows the cloud to become a “lifeline” that prevents battery issues.

According to Roy, Qik’s goal has always been to enable video interactivity through mobile devices. Qik believes it has achieved this goal in its mobile video solution.

While the paid version of the app is currently available in the App Store, the free version is still pending.

Although everyone wants to do video these days, they seem to be hesitant with it for multiple reasons. For starters, many people are intimidated by video. They also think that it is hard and that they have to have a full video crew to be successful at it.

According to video blogging pioneer Steve Garfield, these theories are false. He tells WebProNews that these theories are common misconceptions about video and that video can actually be quite simple.

Instead of going out and buying a new camera that you don’t know how to use, Garfield suggests starting with what you already have. The next step is to practice. Let yourself get comfortable with the camera and speaking on video before you put the content online.

Garfield says that it is best to do something that you are passionate about, such as what Gary Vaynerchuk does.

As far as distribution goes, he recommends using YouTube and Blip.tv. However, he also points out that people should build up their community before they distribute their content, since this would allow for more exposure.

Ultimately, video gives businesses the opportunity to set themselves apart from their competition. It also offers a personal element to businesses, which can be used to better engage with consumers.

Do you see this added value in video?

Not too long ago, Chatroulette earned a lot of comparisons to Twitter and even Facebook in that it was a fast-growing site with a social focus. Now, though, traffic trends seem to be reversing, and less charitable comparisons to Craigslist might be in order on the “social” front.

To provide a little background data: comScore statistics indicated in January that Chatroulette received 109,000 unique visitors. By February, the number had jumped to 960,000.

The site also received all sorts of media attention around that time. Still, as with Twitter, there was the problem of monetization. Andres Palmiter, an online video sales specialist at comScore, said in an interview with Abby Johnson that advertisers wondered, “What can I do with content that I have no control over?”

And specifically, sexual content on the site started to cause a lot of concern.

A promise on Chatroulette’s part to cooperate with authorities and a site redesign haven’t done a lot to address these problems. More recent comScore data shows that unique visitors are growing fewer in number, too.

Chatroulette’s definitely hit a bump. It should be interesting to see if the once-hot property can keep from fading away.

Although the term “digital asset optimization” sounds a bit intimidating, it really is not. According to Chris Boggs, the SEO Director at Rosetta, it is actually an old idea that has recently gained new interest.

As he explains to WebProNews, digital asset optimization is essentially the optimization of non-text content within web pages and the role it plays in search engine rankings. In other words, it pertains to content such as video, images, and even rich, Internet applications like Flash.

This type of content is becoming increasingly popular in certain verticals including retail and health care. For instance, “how-to” videos that explain a process or provide insight into a condition are continually growing in value for consumers.

“There are a lot of reasons that people may look to the Internet and do a type of search that lends itself better to a video result, or an image result, or even an interactive application,” says Boggs.

He goes on to say that the search engines have recently updated their landscape to allow more of this non-text content in the top pages of search results. Although people often view digital asset optimization as a way to get additional listings in search results, Boggs points out that there is a better way to utilize it.

By taking a holistic approach, he says users have the opportunity to have all their web pages gain rankings. Since it gives users a greater chance of ranking, it is very important that they have non-text content on their web pages. In many cases, Boggs says the non-text content is described as a web page in the search results.

Are you taking advantage of the opportunities of digital asset optimization?

How would you like to make your own 3D video? Thanks to innovations from Intel and Cineform, you can. At CES 2010, WebProNews found out how it works.

One would think the process would be complicated, but according to Intel, it’s not. The setup is basic with 2 cameras on a single tripod. Each camera puts out a video stream and with the Cineform Silicon DVR software, the 2 streams are combined.

As a result, a QuickTime file is created that loops back to a TV. Without polarized glasses, consumers see 2 images. However, with polarized glasses on, consumers can see 3D.

If you’re still wondering how this is possible, there is a secret behind it all. As the Intel representative explained, a lot of horsepower is needed in order for this to work, which is where Intel comes in. Cineform’s 3D technologies run on Intel’s Core i7 processor.

This technology is currently available at Cineform.

Polaroid has a new online photo and video sharing service that allows users to upload photos and videos and share them all over the world. At CES 2010, WebProNews caught up with Polaroid’s VP of Product, Jessy Hanley, to learn more about the creative service.

With Polaroid Studio, users can completely customize their online experience. They can do this by adjusting the height and width at which the uploaded content is displayed, cropping, changing the colors, adding frames, as well as a variety of other editing options. Once the user finishes editing their photos, they can also put them on products such as mouse pads and coffee mugs.

In addition, the program includes numerous templates that users can use if they wish. There is no storage limit for photos and videos and users can upload as often as they want. Polaroid Studio also has a Facebook application that lets users copy photos from the program directly into the social network.

According to Hanley, Polaroid Studio is based upon user preference. She said the program can be as easy and quick as the user wants it to be, or as hard and creative as the user wants it to be.

What’s the biggest SEO challenge for a large media company such as CNN? According to Topher Kohan, the SEO Manager at CNN, keeping up with breaking news is the most demanding part of the process.

On the positive front, because CNN has a TV station, they are able to essentially tell people what to search for. However, on the website, they have to determine what people are searching for on their own. In an interview with WebProNews, Kohan said keywords need to be included in the headline, title, and meta description.

As for the future of video SEO for news sites, Kohan told us that he sees microformats as a key ingredient to getting content seen. Google further indicated this when it announced its support of Yahoo’s SearchMonkey RDFa and Facebook Share in September.

Kohan believes these partnerships will allow SEOs to give the search engines more information, which will be better for everyone. Since he expects to see a set of standardized tags within the next 18 months, Kohan advises SEOs to get on board with the coming changes in order to start preparing now.

Although online video has been around for some time now, it has seen extensive growth in the past couple of years. Based on research from comScore, YouTube is even the second largest search engine following Google. According to Kevin Ryan, CMO of WebVisible, marketers have finally realized their need to utilize video.

He went on to say that they understand the importance of having their own YouTube channel. This allows brands to have control over the message they send out to the public. Another method for maintaining that control is hosting video on your own site, as we do here at WPN. With video hosting, there are costs involved as well as the need to provide high quality production to reinforce the brand.

Overall, people are beginning to take video a lot more seriously. Ryan still refers to the space as the “Wild Wild West” but says we are starting to see inklings of what it could look like in the future.

With people being increasingly drawn to video content, everyone is trying to capitalize on video sharing sites such as YouTube. There is, however, one problem: it isn’t always easy. Greg Jarboe is hoping to help marketers in this area with his new book entitled: YouTube and Video Marketing: An Hour A Day.

YouTube is known for funny videos such as cat or children videos. While these videos may go viral, they will likely only produce a one-time audience. In other words, these kids and cats may not to do the same thing again, which means there would be no reason for viewers to return to that channel for more content.

To be successful on YouTube, users cannot simply upload a single video. Statistics show that in an average minute, 24 hours of video has been uploaded to YouTube. As a result of this large amount of competition, Jarboe suggests that users create a series of “compelling content” in order to bring viewers back continually.

Users have to have a reason for wanting to come back to a particular YouTube channel and it is up to the content providers to produce that desire. Is your YouTube channel creating that appeal?

Although it will continue to evolve, the search industry is not going away. According to Rebecca Lieb of Econsultancy, we can expect to see many changes over time, but we should also be aware of the trends in the near future of search.

Coming as no surprise to most, social and behavioral aspects are at the top of the list of trends. Social media is quickly becoming a large part of the business sector and the search industry is no exception. Rebecca says social and behavioral aspects will play a larger role in determining search results because search engines will use those aspects to become smarter and return better, more relevant results to the searchers.

Rebecca also foresees apps playing a strong role in the future of search. She said, “…30 percent of Google searches in Japan… are coming from mobile devices.” Rebecca does not believe this statistic indicates that users will use the search engines on their mobiles, but instead search through apps such as Urbanspoon, PosiMotion, TapIt, and more.

In the longer term, we will see the larger impact that social media has on search. Rebecca says that search will consist of creating media, monitoring that media, and then creating additional optimize-able media. The new media will include videos, images, audio, books, and more. While the job of the SEO will become more difficult and involve more listening and monitoring, the needs of the searcher will be more easily met.

Are you ready for these changes? What are you doing now to better prepare yourself for the future? How do you see the role of an SEO changing?

The search industry is always changing as a result of advancement and development. In this video, Anne Kennedy discusses these changes and how they impact the future of search.

Anne has examined the marketplace, researched Google’s investments, and studied how people use and access the Web. Based upon her investigation, she found that customers will look for products and services with video and Twitter. She also discovered that these actions would take place on mobile devices.

According to comScore, the mobile audience in the UK has increased by 10 percent. It has however, doubled in the U.S.

How does Google fit into all this? According to Anne, many people speculate that Google should purchase Twitter, comparing it to YouTube. Anne says that YouTube grew so rapidly that it needed someone like Google to maintain and support its technology. She believes the YouTube acquisition was beneficial to the search giant because YouTube is the television platform for Google to use to develop Google TV as an advertising model.

As a result of its high market penetration, Google has to constantly find methods to sell and reach its customers. If social networks continue to grow and people turn to them for search, and if Google sees that it needs to find more ways to increase its advertising revenue, Anne says that Google may consider purchasing a social network such as Twitter.

The fact that many of the social networks lack a revenue model could be one reason that large players such as Google are hesitant to acquire them. Another drawback for Google at least, is traditional advertisers.

Despite all the questions and speculations, most people agree that the industry has to build new models to quantify spending and determine results. Anne says there is a model that is currently under development called visibility scoring. It looks at the data of visibility outside the site instead of only looking at the traffic on the site.

Although marketers can see the benefits of social media especially in the area of brand awareness, C-level executives have a harder time seeing growth unless they see actual profitability in numbers. With that being said and as budgets continually get tighter, it is even more imperative that models such as that described above emerge.

Why is video so hot right now? According to Greg Jarboe of SEO-PR, the reason people are creating videos right now is because so many other people are as well. It is simply a chain reaction.

In this video from SES NY, Greg discusses several topics and questions regarding video. Monetization is a hot topic surrounding video since many people struggle with it. On the positive side, initial startup costs are feasible for most users and are only going to get better. Remember the Blendtec campaign? They started with $50 dollars and produced 5 videos, which gave them a 700 percent increase in revenue.

Video can be done on a small budget, but ongoing video campaigns can become expensive. Greg says that each video needs to have its own marketing objective and also be monetized individually. He goes on to say that “every video doesn’t have to go viral to be a success.” Whether or not your business meets your objective is the factor that determines success.

Marketing video is another hot area of interest right now. According to Greg, marketers have to realize that video marketing doesn’t follow traditional marketing standards. He also says marketers need to understand video segmentation. The whole world is not your audience. Businesses do not need to attract a mass audience to meet their goals. Instead, they need to determine who their target market is, and then act accordingly.

Advertising and video have had their fair share of differences from the beginning of the online video boom. Greg says the ad’s placement isn’t the challenging issue. However, the relevancy of the ad’s placement is what really matters. Video advertising will get easier and better and Greg indicates that that time is not too far down the road.

All this information and more is featured in Greg Jarboe’s upcoming book, YouTube and Video Marketing: An Hour a Day that is set to be published in August.
